Neighboring municipalities of Collonges-sous-Salève are Bossey in the north, La Muraz in the east, Archamps in the southwest, and the Swiss municipality of Bardonnex in the northwest.

In the Middle Ages , Collonges-sous-Salève belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Talloires . Under the rule of Bern, the Reformation was introduced in the village in 1536 , but the population changed back to the Catholic faith in 1597. In the Treaty of Turin in 1816, the northern part of the municipality was split off with Evordes and assigned to Bardonnex. Another area change was made in 1836 when Archamps became an independent municipality.
