Desingy is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Desingy is located at 512  m , near Seyssel , about 21 kilometers west-northwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in a panoramic position on a slope gently sloping to the north over the Usses valley , east of the lowland of the Rhone valley , in the Genevois .

The area of the 18.93 km² large municipality covers a section of the western Genevois. The north-western and northern borders run along the Usses, a left tributary of the Rhône. The valley is predominantly forested and has a relatively narrow, flat valley floor. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends southward over the gently rising slope, which is subdivided by several small erosion valleys, including the channels of the Ruisseau de Findreuze and the Ruisseau de Croasse . In the far south, the community soil extends to the high plateau north of the Montagne des Princes and in the Bois des Bolioz . Desingy's highest point is reached here at 661  m .

In addition to the actual town center, Desingy also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Planaz ( 380  m ) on the plateau south of the Vallée des Usses
  • Etrables ( 400  m ) on the plateau south of the Vallée des Usses
  • Tagny ( 460  m ) on the slope south of the Vallée des Usses
  • Vannecy ( 520  m ) on the slope south of the Vallée des Usses
  • Crumel ( 440  m ) on the slope below Desingy

history

The municipality of Desingy was already settled during Roman times, which was proven by the wall foundations. Desingy is first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. The place name originally goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Decimus .

Attractions

Desingy village church, originally from the 11th century, was extensively restored at the end of the 20th century. Below the hamlet of Pelly is the Château de Pelly, which was built in the 13th century and restored in 1964. It has a keep and four towers. Other former mansions are in Etrables, Planaz and La Tour.

In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 Desingy had 1522 inhabitants). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, there has been a significant increase in population.

Economy and Infrastructure

Desingy is still today a predominantly agricultural village. Desingy is located in the Savoie wine region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .

There are also some local small businesses. Many of the employed people are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Local road connections exist with Seyssel, Frangy and Clermont. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 14 km away.
