Bonne , unofficially Bonne-sur-Menoge called, is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Bonne is located at 500  m , about 14 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends in the valley of the Menoge at the confluence of the Foron and on a ledge north of the valley (Haute Bonne), on the edge of the Arve valley , at the southern foot of the Les Voirons mountain ridge .

The area of the 8.58 km² municipal area includes a section of the lower Arve valley. The area is traversed from east to west by the Menoge (right tributary of the Arve) in a valley that is about 30 m deep into the surrounding area. South of the Menoge, the municipal area extends to the Loëx plateau (up to 520  m ). To the north it extends over the slope of Les Voirons to a promontory below Le Pralère , on which the highest elevation of Bonne is reached at 1303  m .

The municipality consists of the villages of Haute Bonne and Basse Bonne as well as various hamlet settlements, including Loëx ( 518  m ) on the plateau between Arve and Menoge, Chamagnou ( 520  m ) at the foot of Les Voirons and Lachat ( 915  m ) on the southern slope of Les Voirons . Neighboring communities of Bonne are Lucinges in the north, Fillinges in the east, Nangy in the south and Arthaz-Pont-Notre-Dame and Cranves-Sales in the west.

history

The municipality of Bonne was already settled in prehistoric times. The current place name goes back to the Gallic word bona , which means fortified village . Bonne is mentioned for the first time in 1246. From that time on, Bonne consisted of two districts: the Haute Bonne patch on the promontory above the Menogetal, which was fortified by the Counts of Savoy in the 13th century , and the lower district of Basse Bonne. In the 14th century the town was given certain freedom rights. In 1973 the previously independent Loëx was incorporated into Bonne.

The Saint-Nicolas church was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style and enlarged in the 16th century. Remains of the former fortification walls of Haute Bonne have been preserved. The spot shows various characteristic houses from the 16th to 19th centuries. There are several mansions in the area, including the Château d'Orlyé, the Château de la Charniaz and the Château de Loëx. The former parish church of Loëx has medieval wall paintings.

With 3218 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Bonne is one of the medium-sized communities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the beginning of the 1960s, there has been a continuous strong population growth. Outside the old village center, numerous single-family houses were built on the panoramic slope of Les Voirons.

Economy and Infrastructure

Bonne lived from small businesses well into the 20th century. Agriculture was also important. Thanks to the proximity to the main traffic axes, there are now various larger companies, including construction and trading companies. Numerous workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Geneva-Annemasse area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road D907, which leads from Annemasse to Taninges . The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 4 km away. Other road connections exist with Douvaine and La Roche-sur-Foron .
