Vétraz-Monthoux is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Vétraz-Monthoux is located at 500 m , about two kilometers southeast of Annemasse and nine kilometers east-southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The double community extends on a ridge in the lower Arve valley , between the heights of the Salève and Les Voirons , on the outskirts of Annemasse, near the border with Switzerland .
The area of the 7.11 km² municipal area includes a section in the lower Arve valley. The southern border runs along the Menoge , which has sunk a 60 m deep valley with a 300 m wide, flat valley floor into the gravel plain through erosion . To the southwest of Vétraz-Monthoux, the Menoge flows into the Arve, which also forms the municipal boundary for a distance of one kilometer. From this deeply incised valley system, the community area extends northwards to the Annemasse plateau and also includes the Monthoux hill, on which the highest point of Vétraz-Monthoux is reached at 571 m . In the extreme northeast, the area extends into the Bois de Rosses ( 505 m ).

The municipality of Vétraz-Monthoux consists of the following districts and settlements:
- Vétraz ( 495 m ) on the southern edge of the Monthoux hill above the Menoge valley
- Bas Monthoux ( 487 m ) on the plateau at the northeast foot of the hill
- Haut Monthoux ( 560 m ) on the hill of the same name
- Collonges ( 455 m ) at the west foot of the hill, above the Arve valley
- Corly ( 509 m ) on the southeast slope of the hill of Monthoux
- La Râpe ( 485 m ) at the eastern foot of the Monthoux hill
Neighboring communities of Vétraz-Monthoux are Annemasse in the north, Cranves-Sales in the east, Arthaz-Pont-Notre-Dame in the south and Étrembières in the west.
history
The municipality of Vétraz-Monthoux was already settled in the Neolithic and Roman times. Monthoux is first mentioned in a document in 1142. The name forms Montheolum (1287) and Montou (1355) have been handed down from the Middle Ages . The place name goes back to the Latin word montosus (mountainous, hilly). Vétraz first appears in the documents in the 13th century.
Monthoux was the site of a castle that was under the rule of Faucigny. Over time, Monthoux experienced various changes of ownership, including the Bernese rule from 1536. During the Savoy War in 1590, the castle was sacked by the people of Geneva. Subsequently, Monthoux was owned by Savoy and shared its fate. In 1818 Vétraz and Monthoux merged to form a twin municipality.
Attractions
The village church at Vétraz was built in the Sardinian style. A chapel has stood on the site of the former keep of the Castle of Monthoux since the 19th century.

With 8900 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Vétraz-Monthoux is one of the larger municipalities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the 1950s, the community has shown continuous population growth, which has increased in recent years. Today the settlement area has grown together seamlessly with that of Annemasse.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Vétraz-Monthoux was primarily an agricultural community. Since the 1950s, it gradually developed into a residential suburb of Annemasse and Geneva. Today there are numerous small and medium-sized businesses, as well as construction and trading companies and companies in the service sector. A large part of the runway area of the Annemasse airfield is also located on the ground of Vétraz-Monthoux.
Although the village is not on major thoroughfares, it is well-developed in terms of traffic. It is located above the main road that leads from Annemasse to Bonneville . The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around four kilometers away.
