Vanzy is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Vanzy is located at 406  m , about 25 kilometers northwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The farming village extends from a promising location on a slope sloping to the south over the confluence of the Ruisseau de Marsin in the Usses, southwest of the Montagne de Vuache , in the Genevois .

The area of the 5.57 km² large municipal area covers a section of the western Genevois. The southern border runs along the Usses, a left tributary of the Rhone , which flows here in a wooded valley from east to west. The valley is sunk around 150 m into the surrounding plateaus. From the north, the Ruisseau de Marsin and another side stream flow below Vanzy . The valleys of these two streams enclose the Vanzy ledge. To the west, the community area extends to the adjacent high plateau, on which the highest point of Vanzy is reached at 537  m .

In addition to the actual town center, Vanzy also includes various hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • Chez Martian ( 290  m ) in the Vallée des Usses
  • Marteret ( 385  m ) on the northern slope of the Vallée des Usses
  • Chatenod ( 365  m ) on the northern slope of the Vallée des Usses

Neighboring municipalities of Vanzy are Clarafond-Arcine in the north, Chessenaz in the east, Desingy in the south and Usinens and Chêne-en-Semine in the west.

history

The municipality of Vanzy was already settled during Roman times, which was proven by the remains of a Roman building. The place was first mentioned in a document in the early 15th century. Vanzy was assigned to the newly created Canton of Frangy in 1860 ; before it belonged to the canton of Seyssel .

Attractions

The village church of Vanzy dates from the 19th century. Also worth seeing are the Château de la Fléchère (from the 15th and 16th centuries, later restored) at the southern exit of the village and the Tour de Mons, which was built in the 11th century.

With 329 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Vanzy is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the population decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 489 inhabitants in Vanzy). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, a slight increase in population has been recorded thanks to the beautiful residential area.

Economy and Infrastructure

Vanzy is still a predominantly agricultural village today . Viticulture on the sunny southern slopes is particularly important . Vanzy is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .

There are also some local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N508, which leads from Annecy to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine . Further road connections exist with Seyssel and Chêne-en-Semine. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 5 km away.
