Contamine-Sarzin is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Contamine-Sarzin is located at 552 m , about 17 kilometers northwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in a panoramic position on a ridge southeast of the Montagne de Vuache , around 180 m above the Usses valley , in the Genevois .
The area of the 6.86 km² municipal area includes a section of the Genevois. The main part of the area is taken up by the wide ridge of Contamine, which culminates at 560 m . It is flanked to the north by the Fornant valley and to the south by that of the Usses. In the west, the ridge is bounded by the transverse ridge of the Mont , a southern branch of the Montagne de Vuache. At 701 m, the highest elevation of Contamine-Sarzin is reached on the Mont .
In addition to the actual town center, Contamine-Sarzin also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- Villard ( 460 m ) on a terrace on the northern slope of the Usses valley
- Sarzin ( 370 m ) in the Usses valley
- Aux Illes ( 370 m ) in the Usses valley
Neighboring municipalities of Contamine-Sarzin are Minzier in the north, Marlioz in the east, Sallenôves and Chilly in the south and Musièges and Chaumont in the west.
history
The municipality of Contamine-Sarzin was already settled in prehistoric times. The place name Contamine goes back to the Latin word condominium (jointly administered property). Until 1749 the village was called Contamine , then Contamine-en-Genevois , from 1793 again Contamine. In 1801 it was renamed Contamine-sous-Marlioz , which was reversed in 1815. The community has been officially called Contamine-Sarzin since 1913 .

With 704 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Contamine-Sarzin is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were 451 inhabitants in Contamine-Sarzin). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, there has been a significant increase in population.
Economy and Infrastructure
Contamine-Sarzin is still today a predominantly agricultural village. There are also some local small businesses. A large number of workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area as well as in the Annecy and Geneva-Annemasse area.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Vers to Sallenôves . Further road connections exist with Minzier and Musièges.
