Musièges is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
Musièges is located at 431 m , about 18 kilometers northwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The farming village extends on a terrace on the western slope of the Mont, above the valley floor of the Usses , south of the Montagne de Vuache , in the Genevois .
The area of the 2.98 km² municipal area includes a section of the Genevois. The terrace of Musièges is bordered in the south and west by the valley of the Usses, a left tributary of the Rhone , in the north by the incised valley of the Fornant . Below Musièges the Fornant flows into the Usses. To the east, the community area extends to the wooded ridge of the Mont , which forms the southern continuation of the Montagne de Vuache on the other side of the Malpas valley. On the ridge, the highest point of Musièges is reached at 701 m .
The hamlet of Serrasson ( 330 m ) in the valley floor of the Usses belongs to Musièges . Neighboring communities of Musièges are Chaumont in the north, Contamine-Sarzin in the east, Chilly in the south and Frangy in the west.
The municipality of Musièges was already settled in prehistoric times. During the Bronze Age, there was a fortified place on the Mont .
The village was first mentioned in a document in the 15th century. Musièges was assigned to the newly created canton of Frangy in 1860 ; before it belonged to the canton of Saint-Julien-en-Genevois .
The village church of Musièges was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style.
With 416 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Musièges is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the population decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 275 inhabitants in Musièges). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, there has been a significant increase in population.
Economy and Infrastructure
Musièges is still a predominantly agricultural village today . Musièges is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .
There are also some local small businesses. A large number of workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area as well as in the Annecy and Geneva-Annemasse area.
The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N508, which runs from Annecy to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine . Further road connections exist with Contamine-Sarzin and Chaumont. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 13 km away.
