Pers-Jussy is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Pers-Jussy is located at around 580  m , northwest of La Roche-sur-Foron , around 14 kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The double community extends slightly higher on the western edge of the wide Arve valley , at the foot of the ridge of the Crêt Falcon .

The area of ​​the 18.68 km 2 municipality covers a section of the lower Arve valley. In the east, Pers-Jussy has a share in the Plaine des Rocailles , a plateau that is slightly inclined towards the Swiss stone pine and has several significant erratic blocks . To the west, the municipality extends over the slope near Pers to the wide ridge between the valley of the Foron and the Arve valley . The highest elevations of Pers-Jussy are reached on the Crêt Falcon ( 901  m ) and at Combloux ( 931  m ) on the edge of the Bornes plateau.

The community consists of the following districts and hamlets:

  • Pers ( 590  m ) at the northeast foot of the Crêt Falcon
  • Jussy ( 532  m ) in the Arve valley on the edge of the Plaine des Rocailles
  • Loisinges ( 530  m ) in the Arve Valley on the Plaine des Rocailles
  • Les Vuardes ( 540  m ) in the Arve Valley on the Plaine des Rocailles
  • Chevrier ( 545  m ) on the Guin at the eastern foot of the Crêt Falcon
  • Navilly ( 640  m ) on the eastern slope of the Crêt Falcon
  • Le Châble ( 750  m ) on the eastern slope of the Crêt Falcon
  • Orney ( 720  m ) on the north slope of the Crêt Falcon above the Forontal
  • Les Cornus ( 820  m ) on the Bornes plateau
  • Le Roguet ( 860  m ) on the Bornes plateau north of the Crêt Falcon
  • Chevrange ( 720  m ) in the Foron valley

Neighboring communities of Pers-Jussy are Reignier-Ésery in the north, Scientrier and Cornier in the east, Etaux and La Chapelle-Rambaud in the south and Arbusigny in the west.

history

The municipality of Pers-Jussy was already settled in the Neolithic and Roman times. Wall foundations of a Roman building were found in Châtelard. Pers is mentioned in the Middle Ages under the name Paers and goes back to the Roman personal name Paternus , while Jussy has its origin in the name Justus . The two villages Pers and Jussy merged in 1815 to form today's municipality.

Attractions

The village church in Pers in its current form dates from the 19th century. The ruins of the Tour du Châtelet and the Château de Cévins are worth mentioning among the secular buildings.

With 3,052 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Pers-Jussy is one of the medium-sized communities in the Haute-Savoie department. There has been a significant increase in population since the mid-1970s. Numerous single-family houses were built outside the old town center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Pers-Jussy was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . Today there are numerous small and medium-sized businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, but especially in the Geneva-Annemasse area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located above the state road that leads from Annemasse to La Roche-sur-Foron . Further road connections exist with Arbusigny, La Chapelle-Rambaud and Scientrier. The closest connection to the  A41 motorway is around five kilometers away. The place also had a train station on the Aix-les-Bains – Annemasse line .
