Vovray-en-Bornes is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Vovray-en-Bornes is at 877 m , about 18 kilometers north of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement community extends from a panoramic location on a terrace on the southeast slope of the Salève , above the Usses Valley on the edge of the Bornes plateau.
The area of the 6.57 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of Mont Salève. The eastern border runs along the Usses , a left tributary of the Rhone . This body of water flows south in a wide valley, parallel to the ridge of the Salève. From the valley low, the communal soil extends westward over the relatively gently sloping slope and the terrace of Vovray, which is followed by the densely wooded steep slope of the Salève. The north-western border lies on the wide ridge of the Salève. The highest point of Vovray-en-Bornes is reached at 1347 m on the summit of the Plan du Salève .
In addition to the village itself, Vovray-en-Bornes also includes numerous hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- Baudy ( 720 m ) in the Usses valley
- La Grange ( 810 m ) on the terrace of Vovray
- Le Vernay ( 875 m ) on the terrace of Vovray at the foot of the Salève
- La Mouille ( 880 m ) on the terrace of Vovray
- Rogin ( 940 m ) on the southeast slope of the Salève
Neighboring municipalities of Vovray-en-Bornes are Le Sappey in the north, Menthonnex-en-Bornes and Villy-le-Bouveret in the east and Cruseilles and Présilly in the west.
history
Vovray-en-Bornes is first mentioned in a document in the 15th century. The place name goes back to the popular Latin word vavra (vacant or bad land). In the Middle Ages, the Vovray area was under the control of the Bishop of Geneva.

With 524 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Vovray-en-Bornes is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the first half of the 20th century the population decreased steadily (1901 Vovray-en-Bornes had 432 inhabitants). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, there has been a significant increase in population.
Economy and Infrastructure
Vovray-en-Bornes is still today a predominantly agricultural village. There are also some local small businesses. Some of the workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Geneva-Annemasse and Annecy area .
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares a little above a local road that leads from Monnetier-Mornex along the southeast foot of the Salève to Cruseilles . Further road connections exist with Arbusigny and Menthonnex-en-Bornes. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 15 km away.
