The Mont Salève is in the Haute-Savoie in France situated mountain of the Savoy Alps , just six kilometers from the Swiss city of Geneva away than the local mountain he is.

The Salève is an 18 km long ridge stretching from southwest to northeast, consisting of the Pitons in the southwest, the Grand Salève ("Großer Salève") and the Petit Salève ("Kleiner Salève") in the northeast. At the summit of le Grand Piton, it measures 1,379  m . Between the Grand and the Petit Salève runs a deep saddle in which the village of Monnetier is located. From 1892 to 1935 an electric rack railway ran from Pas de l'Échelle near Veyrier on two routes, both around the Petit Salève and directly to Monnetier and from there to the Grand Salève. In 1932 the north end of the Grand Salève was made accessible with a cable car (architect Maurice Braillard) up to 1120  m from the Pas de l'Échelle.

The east side of the Salève descends relatively gently towards the Molasse des Bornes plateau, while the Geneva side, eroded by erosion, drops off abruptly. The mountain range is cut by several narrow and deep gorges. One of them, the “Grande Varappe”, lent its name to the French word for climbing (varapper), a popular activity there , at the end of the 19th century .

The pre-glacial basin of Monnetier , which separates the Petit Salève from the Grand Salève, was dug by the Arve . When the Salève finally rose, the Arve dodged to the northeast, where it now flows around the Petit Salève.

The Salève is a popular destination because of its proximity to Annemasse and above all to Geneva and offers a wonderful view over Geneva, Lake Geneva , the south of the Jura , the foothills of the Alps to the Mont Blanc massif and the Lac d'Annecy .

The Grand Salève is well suited for paragliding because of its good thermals on the steep west side of Geneva, which is widely used in summer.
