Location of the municipality | |
Veyrier is a municipality in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland .
geography
The community lies directly at the foot of the Salève . A special feature is the French-Swiss border , which divides the original settlement in two. The place on the French side (Pas de l'Echelle) is politically part of the municipality of Étrembières . Originally characterized by agriculture, Veyrier has been almost completely urbanized in the last thirty years, with the majority of the farms being turned up as building land. The historic town center was preserved.
The valley station of the cable car to the Salève ( 1097 m above sea level ) is already in France. The Salève with the cliff jutting almost vertically out of the plain is the Geneva excursion mountain. Europe's first electric cogwheel train ( Chemin de fer du Salève ) had been running from Pas de l'Echelle in France to the Salève since 1899 and was replaced by the cable car in 1932, which was also considered a technical sensation when it opened. The former route of the old rack railway has meanwhile been destroyed by a large quarry at the foot of the Salève. Until after the Second World War there was also a tram from Geneva to Veyrier.
history
In 1125 the county of Savoy emerged from the county of Vienne and was raised to a duchy under King Sigismund in 1416, which also included the area of today's municipality of Veyrier. In 1770 Pierre-Claude de la Fléchère achieved the elevation of his possessions to the County of Veyrier. He had the Chateau de Veyrier built, which is now in the French Pas de l'Echelle, and the church was renovated. Today it is in the center of the Swiss village. De la Fléchère also had the first bridge built over the Arve , the main tributary of the Rhone south of Geneva , and was one of the main sponsors of the construction of the city of Carouge . De la Fléchère died in 1790 and is buried in what is now the village church of Veyrier. The altar mosaic of St. Mauritius was added in the 19th century.
In 1816, at the Congress of Vienna, the city of Geneva, its subject areas as well as the former French and Savoyard territories (including the County of Veyrier and the city of Carouge) were formed into the Republic of Geneva, which in turn joined Switzerland as a new canton.
