Chêne-Thônex was an independent political municipality in the canton of Geneva until 1869.
The hamlet of Chêne lay on both banks of the Seymaz and is mentioned as Quercus as early as 1270 . Chêne belonged to Geneva since 1564. With the Turin Treaty of 1754, the left bank went to Savoy , while the right bank remained with Geneva (today the municipality of Chêne-Bougeries ) and the hamlet was thereby divided into two parts.
Thônex also belonged to Chêne on the left bank . Both passed into the possession of France in 1792 and returned to the Canton of Geneva in 1816. In 1869 the separate communities of Chêne-Bourg and Thônex emerged from the separation .
