history

The remains of a Roman manor and graves from late antiquity and the early Middle Ages have been found in the municipality. The place is mentioned for the first time in 1496 as designation of origin: Gervasius Barberii, de Eyria , carpentator ; In 1511 it appears as Ayria Villa , in 1572 as Ayre-la-Ville . The place name probably goes back to the Latin ārea 'area, square, market'; the later addition Villa / -la-Ville means 'settlement, village' and serves to distinguish it from other localities with the same name .

Aire-la-Ville belonged to Bern from 1536 to 1564 before it belonged to Savoy until 1601 . The community then belonged to France . From 1716 to 1816 it again belonged to Savoy. With the Turin Treaty of March 16, 1816, the municipality finally came to the Canton of Geneva .
