Monnetier-Mornex is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

Monnetier-Mornex is located at 600  m , about four kilometers south of Annemasse and eight kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The double municipality extends in an elevated position on the eastern slopes of the Salève and the Petit Salève, west of the lower Arve valley , near the border with Switzerland .

The area of ​​the 11.40 km 2 large municipal area includes a section in the lower Arve valley. The eastern border runs along the Arve or its left tributary Viaison . Both bodies of water are cut deeply into the surrounding area. From these rivers the municipal area extends westward over the Mont Gosse ( 631  m ) and the slope of Esserts up to the heights of the Petit Salève ( 899  m ) and the Salève, on whose northeastern roof reaches the highest point of Monnetier-Mornex at 1265  m becomes. Between the Grand Salève and the Petit Salève is the Monnetier valley cut, which was created by the erosive force of a prehistoric course of the Swiss stone pine. The north-western municipal boundary runs along the steep slope on the side of the Salève facing Geneva.

Community structure

The municipality of Monnetier-Mornex consists of the following districts and settlements:

  • Monnetier ( 695  m ) in the characteristic valley section between Grand Salève and Petit Salève
  • Baugé ( 660  m ) on the eastern edge of the Monnetier valley cut
  • Mornex ( 520  m ) on the southern slope of Mont Gosse above the Viaison valley
  • Bas Mornex ( 495  m ) on the eastern slope of Mont Gosse above the Arve valley
  • Esserts-Salève ( 590  m ) on the eastern slope of the Salève above the valley of the Viaison
  • Naz ( 600  m ) at the eastern foot of the Salève

Neighboring communities of Monnetier-Mornex are Étrembières in the north, Arthaz-Pont-Notre-Dame and Reignier-Ésery in the east, La Muraz in the south and Bossey in the west.

Various finds indicate that the municipality of Monnetier-Mornex was already populated in the Neolithic , the Bronze Age and the Roman Age. The Celts were already mining iron at the foot of the Salève.

Since the 10th century, the area was subordinate to the bishops of Geneva, later the Counts of Geneva. Monnetier and Mornex ( Mornacum or Mornay in the Middle Ages ) were mentioned in the 12th century. There was a lock in both Mornex and Monnetier. In 1659 the villages came to Savoy and from that time shared in its fate. At the end of the 19th century, Monnetier developed into a climatic health resort with various hotels. In 1974 Esserts-Salève was incorporated into Monnetier-Mornex.

From 1893 to 1937 the village was served by the first electric rack railway , the Chemin de fer du Salève .

Attractions

Monnetier Church originally dates back to the 12th century, but was rebuilt around 1900. The Saint-André chapel in Esserts-Salève dates back to the 14th century. There are other chapels in Mornex and Naz (the latter dates from the 8th century). Of the secular buildings, the Château de l'Ermitage from the 19th century and the Château de Mornex as well as the mills from the 17th century near Naz are worth mentioning.

With 2295 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Monnetier-Mornex is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the 1970s, the community has shown continuous population growth.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Monnetier-Mornex was predominantly an agricultural community. Since the 1970s, it has gradually developed into an attractive place to live near the centers of Annemasse and Geneva. Today there are many small and medium-sized businesses. Numerous workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Geneva-Annemasse area. In Haut Mornex there is the Villa Emanuel, a Protestant home with a camp site.

The villages of Monnetier and Mornex have good transport links. They are on the tourist road that leads from Annemasse over the heights of the Salève to Cruseilles . The closest connection to the A40 motorway  is around four kilometers away. Bas Mornex owned a train station on the Aix-les-Bains – Annemasse line .
