Copponex is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Copponex is located at 576 m , about 17 kilometers north of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in a scenic location at the southwest foot of the Salève , in the valley of the Ruisseau de la Férande (side stream of the Usses), in the Genevois .
The area of the 9.21 km² municipal area includes a section of the Genevois. The southern border runs along the Usses , a left tributary of the Rhone , which flows here in a deep valley from east to west. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends northwards onto the slopes and terraces on both sides of the valley of the Ruisseau de la Férande and into the Bois Chardon forest . In the far east, the communal soil extends to the ridge of the Salève. In the vicinity of Les Avenières, the highest point of Copponex is reached at 1010 m .
In addition to the actual village, Copponex also includes several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:
- Châtillon ( 490 m ) on the northern slope of the Usses valley
- La Vellaz ( 480 m ) on the northern slope of the Usses valley
- Mézier ( 590 m ) on a terrace south of the village
- Follon ( 690 m ) on the southwest slope of the Salève
- Malbuisson ( 748 m ) on the main road on the southwest slope of the Salève
Neighboring municipalities of Copponex are Andilly and Saint-Blaise in the north, Cruseilles in the east, Cercier in the south and Cernex in the west.
history
The municipality of Copponex was already settled in prehistoric times. In 1860, Copponex was assigned to the newly created canton of Cruseilles , before it belonged to the canton of Saint-Julien-en-Genevois . Due to the nationwide reorganization of the French cantons, the allocation changed again in 2015, and Copponex is now part of the canton of La Roche-sur-Foron .
Attractions
The village church dates from the Middle Ages, while the bell tower was raised in the 19th century.

With 1154 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Copponex is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries the number of inhabitants decreased continuously (in 1861 there were still 642 inhabitants in Copponex). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, there has been a significant increase in population.
Economy and Infrastructure
Copponex is still today a predominantly agricultural village. There are also some local small businesses. A large number of workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy and Geneva - Annemasse regions .
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. The half-connector 19 on the highway A41 (entrance and exit direction of Geneva) is located in the municipality and can the department road and within a few minutes 27 GB.
