Reignier-Esery (until 2007 Reignier ) is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of La Roche-sur-Foron in the arrondissement of Saint-Julien-en-Genevois .

geography

Reignier-Ésery is 474 m above sea level, about halfway between Annemasse and La Roche-sur-Foron , twelve kilometers southeast of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends on a plateau in the broad Arve valley, east of the Foron valley cut , which should not be confused with the Foron river of the same name , which flows through La Roche-sur-Foron.

The area of the 25.08 square kilometer municipal area includes a section of the lower Arve valley. The northern border always runs along the Swiss stone pine, which has cut itself around 30 to 50 m deep into the surrounding groundwater-rich gravel plain due to erosion . The largely natural course of the river has been preserved in this almost uninhabited valley. From the Arve, the community area extends southward over the valley floodplain and a steep slope to the Reignier plateau ( Plaine des Rocailles with several important erratic blocks ). This is divided by several erosion valleys from brooks that arise on the surrounding slopes. West of the main town of Reignier, the terrain rises continuously on the ridge of Ésery and on the high plateau of Bornes, which extends between the Salève and the Bornes massif . On the wide ridge north of Arbusigny, the highest point of Reignier-Ésery is reached at 832 m.

The municipality of Reignier-Ésery consists of the main village Reignier and numerous other villages and hamlets, namely:

  • L'Éculaz ( 456  m ) in the Arve valley
  • Boringe ( 468  m ) in the Arve valley
  • La Fin ( 471  m ) in the Arve Valley
  • Cry ( 475  m ) in the Arve valley
  • Magny ( 481  m ) in the Arve valley
  • Méran ( 490  m ) west of the Foron at the foot of the slope
  • Arculinge ( 575  m ) on the eastern slope of the Bornes plateau
  • Cusy ( 590  m ) on the eastern slope of the Bornes plateau
  • Moussy ( 660  m ) on a ledge on the eastern slope of the Bornes plateau
  • Marsinge ( 490  m ) on the western edge of the Arve valley
  • Pollinge ( 485  m ) on the western edge of the Arve valley
  • Viaison ( 454  m ) above the confluence of the Viaison with the Arve at the foot of the Petit Salève
  • Césarge ( 535  m ) on the slope opposite Mornex
  • Ésery ( 600  m ) on the ridge between the valleys of Viaison in the west and Arve in the east

Neighboring municipalities of Reignier-Ésery are Arthaz-Pont-Notre-Dame and Nangy in the north, Scientrier in the east, Pers-Jussy and Arbusigny in the south and La Muraz and Monnetier-Mornex in the west.

history

The municipality of Reignier-Ésery was already populated during prehistoric times. The Pierre-aux-Fées dolmen is an important testimony to this period . Various remains have also been found from Roman and Burgundian times . The place is mentioned for the first time in 1270 under the name Rignie . The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Renius . In 1974 the previously independent municipality of Ésery was incorporated into Reignier. On April 1, 2007, the municipality was officially renamed Reignier-Ésery.

Attractions

The village church of Reignier in Sardinian style was extensively restored and redesigned in the 19th century. A 12th century chapel stands in Moussy, while the Ésery church originally served as the castle chapel of the Château de Sacconay (parts from the 13th century are still visible). On the Arve, the Tour de Bellecombe from the 12th and 13th centuries once guarded an important river crossing; the tower was sacked in 1591. The castles of Magny, Villy and Pollinge are on the parish grounds. The dolmen de la Pierre-aux-Fées made of Mont-Blanc granite is also worth seeing.
