The Mont Gosse is a 628 m high hill at the eastern foot of the Petit Salève . It is located in the commune of Monnetier-Mornex , in the French department of Haute-Savoie . It is located above the village of Mornex, 200 m above the Arve valley .
The hill is named after the Geneva scientist and pharmacist Henri-Albert Gosse . He bought the hill in 1800 and built a country house and a pavilion on the medieval castle ruins, called Temple de la Nature ( Temple of Nature ), in which the Swiss Society for Natural Research was founded on October 6, 1815 . The site is still owned by the descendants of Henri-Albert Gosse.
Mornex Castle
In the Middle Ages, Mornex Castle stood on the hill. This first belonged to the Mornex family ; In 1289 it was bought by the Counts of Geneva . At the beginning of the 15th century, the castle was purchased by Amadeus VIII , Count of Savoy (later Duke of Savoy, Prince of Piedmont, and antipope Felix V) and remained in the possession of the House of Savoy until the Revolution . The castle enclosure had the shape of an irregular rectangle of 85 by 36-40 m; the foundation walls are still visible today.
