Mitja Drinovec took part in international competitions for the first time at the Junior World Championships 2014 in Presque Isle and reached 34th place in both the sprint and the pursuit. At the Junior European Championships in 2015 he achieved a 29th place in the pursuit as the best placement. At the Junior World Championships he was able to reach 19th place in the sprint and only reached 36th place in the subsequent pursuit. The Junior European Championships were more successful for him this year. In the sprint he finished seventh and in the pursuit he reached the top ten with a tenth place.

At the Junior European Championships he reached the 14th place in the individual and at the Junior World Championships the 26th place in the pursuit. At the end of the season he took part regularly in races of the IBU Cup, but could not achieve a top ten placement.

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season , Drinovec was able to achieve its first top ten placement in the IBU Cup with eighth place. After two races in the IBU Cup, he started the rest of the season in the World Cup . With the Slovenian relay he was tenth in Ruhpolding , together with Miha Dovžan , Lenart Oblak and Jakov Fak . This was the best result of a Slovenian relay since tenth place at the 2015 Biathlon World Championships . This result could repeat the relay at the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang . At the Olympic Winter Games, Drinovec also started in singles and sprints. In these races he achieved an 80th and a 72nd place. At the last relay race of the season, Drinovec was able to achieve ninth place together with Klemen Bauer , Jakov Fak and Miha Dovžan.
