The women's 12.5 km mass start race in biathlon at the 2018 Winter Olympics took place on February 17, 2018 at 8:15 p.m. The venue was the Alpensia Biathlon Center . The Olympic champion was Anastasiya Kuzmina from Slovakia , ahead of Darja Domratschawa from Belarus and the Norwegian Tiril Eckhoff .
Competition description
In the mass start over 12.5 km, 30 athletes started the race at the same time. These lined up in ten rows of three athletes. Four laps of equal length were run, after the first four laps the shooting range had to be started once. The shooting was in the order lying / lying / standing / standing. For each target not hit, the athlete had to complete a 150 meter penalty loop. The difference in altitude was 350 to 500 m. For the qualification of the mass start race, the same qualification criteria applied to the Olympic Games as to the biathlon world championships . The gold medal winners of the previous individual competitions entered the race with start numbers 1–3, the silver medalists with start numbers 4–6 and the bronze medalists with 7–9. In addition, the 15 best female athletes in the overall ranking of the ongoing Biathlon World Cup were given the right to start. The number of remaining starting places was based on how many athletes had won more than one medal in the previous competitions and so one or more of the starting places of the first nine athletes were not filled. The following athletes then automatically moved up with their start number. The at least six remaining starting places were awarded to the athletes who, according to the point system of the Biathlon World Cup , would have won the most points in the previous races. There was no personal right to start for the mass start winner of the previous year like at the Biathlon World Championships.
Total ascent: 425 m, maximum ascent: 40 m, difference in altitude: 36 m
30 participants from 13 countries, all in the rating.
