Germany participated in the 2018 Winter Olympics with 152 athletes (94 men, 58 women).

The German team, appearing for the first time under the name “Team Germany”, was represented in every sport except curling . In a first round on January 16, the first 43 athletes, mainly tobogganers, figure skaters and the 30-person ice hockey team, which had to be reduced by five players, were nominated. On January 23, the remaining athletes in the other sports followed. On January 25, the DOSB was assigned a further quota place for Kea Kühnel in slopestyle, whereby the final line-up with 154 athletes was fixed, including the snowboarder Nadja Flemming , who was nominated with reservations and who ultimately did not get a quota place as a successor. The athletes are accompanied by a group of about 150 people, made up of coaches, supervisors and officials. For the first time, the DOSB board member for competitive sports , Dirk Schimmelpfennig, was Chef de Mission . The heads of the delegation are the DOSB chairwoman Veronika Rücker and DOSB president Alfons Hörmann .

Bruno Massot trying on the new clothing

The clothing took place for the first time in the Postpalast in Munich and lasted a good two weeks until January 24th. Unlike the previous dressing, soldiers in a barracks were not responsible for dressing up, but volunteer helpers. The dressing was accompanied by four media days each with a thematic focus. In addition to the clothing, the accreditation for the " German House " also took place. In addition, all participants had to sign the DOSB's athletes' agreement and were examined by the National Anti-Doping Agency Germany for possible violations.

After getting dressed - a cart full of clothes and accessories

Eric Frenzel (Nordic Combined), Natalie Geisenberger (tobogganing), Claudia Pechstein (speed skating), Christian Ehrhoff (ice hockey) and Viktoria Rebensburg (alpine skiing) were nominated as possible flag bearers for the opening ceremony . In an online vote, everyone could cast their vote on the DOSB website until February 5th. In addition, all participating athletes also had one vote, the two results were each counted half. On February 8th, one day before the opening ceremony, Eric Frenzel was announced as the flag bearer. The DOSB ice hockey player Christian Ehrhoff was chosen as the flag bearer for the graduation ceremony.

With 14 gold medals and a total of 31 medals, the German team achieved their best cross-team result since reunification, a comparison with times before the fall is hardly possible due to the much smaller program of the games. Only Norway won the same number of gold medals and a total of 39 medals eight more. The sport with the most medals for "TeamD" was the biathlon with a total of seven medals, including three gold medals. The German team also won three gold medals in Nordic combined, luge and bobsleigh. The most successful individual athletes were Eric Frenzel and the biathlete Laura Dahlmeier , each with two gold and one bronze medals. Luge runners Natalie Geisenberger , Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt , as well as bobsleigh athletes Francesco Friedrich and Thorsten Margis also achieved two gold medals and thus the best possible yield of medals in their sports . In ice hockey, the German team reached the final for the first time and surprisingly, in which they just lost to Russia. Apart from two medals in snowboarding, the German team only achieved its medals in the "classic" and not in the newer winter sports that have been gradually introduced since 1992. In addition, in some sports such as alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and speed skating, unlike in the previous Olympic Games, the athletes went completely empty-handed.

As substitute athletes, Paul Krenz and Kevin Korona traveled to the games instead of Rödiger for the men and Ann-Christin Strack and Lisette Thöne for the women.

1 In the event of a tie after four duels, the better total running time of all four runners decides whether they will advance. In this ranking, Germany was ahead of Slovakia in the round of 16 and behind Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Originally Felix Neureuther and Stefan Luitz had also fulfilled the Olympic norm and were supposed to start at the Games, but both tore a cruciate ligament during the World Cup season, which led to the end of the season.
