Katharina Hennig (born June 14, 1996 in Annaberg-Buchholz ) is a German cross-country skier .

Career

Hennig from Königswalde in the Ore Mountains attended the elite winter sports school in Oberwiesenthal from 2002 to 2015 and was trained by Joachim Gerstenberger. She belonged to SV Neudorf until 2011 and has since started for WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal .

At the German Cross-Country Ski Championships 2015 in Oberwiesenthal, she became German champion over 5 km and in the pursuit. At the Junior World Championships in Rasnov , Romania , the Erzgebirge woman won the silver medal in the 10 km freestyle race behind the Swede Ebba Andersson . Katharina Hennig had already won bronze with the German team in 2013 and 2015 and was fourth in 2014. She made her World Cup debut on January 24, 2016 in Nové Město, Czech Republic . As the starter of the Germany II relay, she kept up with the top group and landed with her teammates in seventh place. At the German Cross-Country Ski Championships in 2016 in Oberhof and Kirchzarten , she came second over 16.5 km freestyle and over 30 km classic.

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season she started in Ruka in the World Cup singles for the first time and with the 27th place over 10 km she recorded her first World Cup points. In the following World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer , she achieved 27th place. In January 2017 she achieved her first podium in the World Cup with second place in the relay in Ulricehamn . Her best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti were 11th place in the skiathlon and sixth place with the relay. She was 43rd in the overall World Cup and 6th in the U23 World Cup. At the German cross-country skiing championships in 2017 in Oberwiesenthal, she was champion of the 30 km freestyle and team sprint together with Anne Winkler .

After 40th place in the Ruka Triple at the beginning of the 2017/18 season , she finished 21st in the Tour de Ski 2017/18 and 39th place in the overall World Cup ranking. Her best placements at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang were 19th place in the 30 km mass start race and sixth place in the relay. In March 2018 she was again German champion (over 20 km classic) at the German cross-country skiing championships in Reit im Winkl and came second in the team sprint with Anne Winkler.

In the 2018/19 season Hennig finished 28th in the Lillehammer Triple and 17th in the World Cup finals in Québec. In addition, she finished in the top ten five times in the individual World Cup and reached 30th place in the overall World Cup and 14th place in the Distance World Cup at the end of the season. At the U23 World Championships in Lahti in 2019 , she won the bronze medal in the 15 km mass start race. She also came fourth there in the 10 km freestyle. Her best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tirol were 11th place over 10 km classic and fourth place with the relay. At the end of March 2019 she became German champion in the mass start race over 20 km freestyle at the German cross-country skiing championships in Reit im Winkl and together with Anne Winkler in the team sprint and achieved second place with the relay of WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal.

In the 2019/20 season, Hennig finished 27th in the Ruka Triple and eighth in the Tour de Ski 2019/20 . She was able to achieve her first podium in a classic individual race in the fifth stage in Val di Fiemme with third place over 10 km. In the overall ranking of the Tour de Ski she was eighth and celebrated her best result in this competition. She finished the season in 18th place in the overall World Cup and 12th place in the Distance World Cup.
