Robin Johannes Geueke (born July 16, 1992 in Lennestadt ) is a German luge rider .

Career

Geueke started tobogganing at the BSC Winterberg in 2001 at the age of nine . He has been a two-seater with David Gamm since 2010 , and acts as the larger and heavier of the two as a pilot.

Geueke / Gamm achieved their first international successes in the junior area. At the Junior World Championships in Oberhof in 2011 they finished third behind Ludwig Rieder and Patrick Rastner and their compatriots Nico Grüßner and Toni Förtsch . A year later they only had to admit defeat to Grüßner / Förtsch in Königssee . They also won the overall ranking of the Junior World Cup in the 2011/12 season.

Geueke / Gamm made their international men's debut in the 2012/13 season in the Nations Cup race at Königssee, where they finished seventh, but were unable to qualify for the World Cup as a double that started outside of the World Cup competition. In Altenberg they got the chance to qualify via the Nations Cup for the first time and finished eighth. With that they were qualified for the World Cup race, in which they immediately finished tenth. Another race followed at the Königssee, in which they only had to admit defeat to the doubles Lukáš and Antonín Brož . They finished the World Cup race again in tenth place. At that time, the BSD saw a third double alongside Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt as well as Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken , which could achieve success in the World Cup and beyond in the long term. Thus Geueke / Gamm competed with Daniel Rothamel and Toni Förtsch, Nico Grüßner and Chris Rohmeis as well as Julius Löfler and Toni Küchler for the third starting place, which was repeatedly awarded to another of the doubles. In the overall ranking of the season they were second best in this double 28. The fight for third permanent starting place continued in the following season; Geueke / Gamm made their debut on their home track in Winterberg . In the Nations Cup race they finished 14th and qualified again for the following World Cup race, in which they were 12th. In Königssee, Oberhof and Altenberg they came in sixth place, as they did in the Nations Cup , and they finished fifth at the season finale in Sigulda . They finished 16th in the overall ranking of the competition. But only in Königssee and Sigulda did Geueke / Gamm have the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup via the Nations Cup. In these races they achieved the first single-digit result in the World Cup in ninth place at Königssee. In the overall standings, they were only 28 in three races. With the 2014 European Luge Championships in Sigulda, Geueke and Gamm drove their first international men's championship. In the absence of the Olympic riders from Germany, they were the best German doubles with tenth place and were sixth in the team relay with Dajana Eitberger and Johannes Ludwig .

The 2014/15 season brought the final breakthrough in the World Cup. Geueke / Gamm started in the World Cup from the beginning of the season and contested all races apart from the races in Lillehammer and the season finale in Sochi . In Altenberg they were able to improve their personal best in both the classic race and the sprint to seventh place. On the other hand, there was also a disqualification in Lake Placid . In the overall standings they finished 14th with 330 points. They won the overall standings in the Nations Cup ahead of Tomas Stoll and Lorenz Koller , won the races in Calgary , Königssee, Oberhof and Altenberg and came third in Lake Placid. In 2015/16 Geueke / Gamm only had to qualify in the first two races of the Nations Cup, since then they have belonged to the seeded group and were directly qualified for the World Cup. They contested all races of the World Cup season and finished ninth in the overall standings with 481 points. In Lake Placid they achieved their best season as well as their best career result in fourth place. At the 2016 Luge World Championships at Königssee, Geueke and Gamm came fourth behind the German doubles Wendl / Arlt and Eggert / Benecken, as well as the Italians Christian Oberstolz and Patrick Gruber, and thus just missed a first international medal . They also came in seventh at the 2016 European Luge Championships in Altenberg .

Geueke / Gamm at the World Cup in Altenberg in February 2017

The 2016/17 season brought the final breakthrough to the top of the world. In the first race of the season in Winterberg, behind Eggert / Benecken, they achieved a podium finish for the first time with second place. Apart from crashed races in Sigulda, Geueke and Gamm only achieved results in the top six. They finished third in the sprint in Winterberg, Lake Placid, Königssee, Oberhof, Pyeongchang and Altenberg. In the overall standings, they came fourth behind the two established German doubles and the Americans Matt Mortensen and Jayson Terdiman with 671 points. They missed third place by just three points. They reached eighth place in the Sprint World Cup. At the Königssee they won the bronze medal behind the other two German doubles at the 2017 European Luge Championships . The Luge World Championships in 2017 in Igls , they finished in fifth place. The 2017/18 season brought good results again, but Geueke / Gamm were not as consistent as in the previous season. In Winterberg, in the sprint race in Winterberg, in Altenberg and at Königssee, they finished third. After a disqualification in Lillehammer and the associated missing of the sprint race as well as a bad race with a 16th place at the following season finale in Sigulda, which again missed qualification for the sprint race by one place, they finished the season with 524 points sixth overall. Geueke / Gamm failed to qualify for the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang due to strong national competition from Eggert / Benecken and Wendl / Arlt. Thus, the 2018 European Luge Championships in Sigulda, held as part of the World Cup, were the only major event of the season in which they achieved their worst performance of the season and finished 14th.

Nationally, Geueke / Gamm achieved third places at the German Championships in 2014 , 2016 and 2017 , and fourth in 2012 and 2013 .
