The German Luge Championships 2017 took place on October 22, 2017 in the DKB Eiskanal in Altenberg .

Originally it was planned to hold the competition as early German championships from December 21 to 23, 2016 in Altenberg. Due to massive transport problems with the racing sleds during the transfer from the last World Cup station in Park City ( USA , December 15-17, 2016), this date had to be canceled. The sleds of the athletes starting in the World Cup would not have arrived in Altenberg until the evening of December 22nd, 2016, which would have made a fair implementation of the competition impossible. The event was finally held two weeks before the start of the international training week in the Alpensia Sliding Center , the Olympic track in Pyeongchang , and served as the prelude to the 2017/18 Olympic season and the fourth and decisive World Cup qualification race.

The titles in the individual and team competitions went to defending champion Natalie Geisenberger in the women, Andi Langenhan in the men and Toni Eggert / Sascha Benecken in the doubles. Again a team relay was held at the German championships, which was won again by the “Sunshine Training Group” around Natalie Geisenberger, Felix Loch and Tobias Wendl / Tobias Arlt .

Surprisingly, the junior world champion Jessica Tiebel took second place and relegated the world cup starter Dajana Eitberger , world champion Tatjana Hüfner and Julia Taubitz to the other places. Head coach Norbert Loch was very satisfied with the result of Geisenberger and Tiebel, he recognized Tatjana Hüfner was in a lack of form on the day, he criticized Julia Taubitz because she was more than a second behind winner Geisenberger.

Natalie Geisenberger, Tatjana Hüfner, Dajana Eitberger and Julia Taubitz qualified as World Cup starters. Jessica Tiebel was supposed to start another season in the Junior World Cup and was also nominated for a start as an additional starter in the Nations Cups in Igls , Winterberg and Altenberg. However, additional starters have no chance to qualify for the World Cup in the Nations Cup, which serves as qualification for the World Cup for tobogganers who do not belong to the seeded group.
