Anna Fernstädt (born November 23, 1996 in Prague ), also known as Anna Fernstädtová , is a German-Czech skeleton pilot who changed countries from Germany to the Czech Republic for the 2018/19 season . She took part in the 2018 Winter Olympics for the DOSB .

Career

Anna Fernstädt was active as a gymnast at TSV Heusenstamm in her childhood and youth and in 2011 she switched to skeleton . Already on December 30, 2011, she took part in a German championship for the first time and finished tenth in the German skeleton championships 2012 , which was held in Winterberg . A year later, she took twelfth place at the 2013 German championships on the Altenberg racing sledge and bobsleigh track .

Before the 2013/14 season, Anna Fernstädt took part in the German Skeleton Championship 2014 on October 26, 2013 and, like two years ago, was able to finish tenth. In the 2013/14 season she also made her international debut in the European Skeleton Cup . On November 22nd, 2013 she completed her first race in the European Cup and finished fifth in the DKB-Eiskanal in Altenberg . A day later, she finished sixth in the second race in Altenberg. On December 7, 2013, she won her first race on the bobsleigh Igls artificial ice rink in what was only her third race in the European Cup, ahead of her teammate Maxi Just and the Russian Elina Galijewa . At the second race in Innsbruck she finished second. On her home track, the Königssee artificial ice rink , she was able to win the two European Cup races, winning ahead of Maxi Just and Kim Meylemans and Maxi Just and Renata Chusina . At the end of the season she won the overall standings ahead of her teammates Maxi Just and Kim Meylemans.

For the 2014/15 season Anna Fernstädt was able to qualify for the Skeleton Intercontinental Cup. In her first Intercontinental Cup race on November 22, 2014 in Lillehammer , she immediately took third place behind Rose Mcgrandle and Jacqueline Lölling . In the two competitions in Königssee she was again able to take third place. She finished eighth in the 2015 German Championship and then started in the European Cup , where she also came third behind Jacqueline Lölling and Maxi Just in the last race of the season . At the end of the Intercontinental Cup she finished twelfth in the overall ranking with 378 points and 15th in the overall European Cup ranking with 150 points. At the end of the 2014/15 season, she took part in the Skeleton Junior World Championships for the first time and, when Jacqueline Lölling won, she finished fifth at the Junior World Championship 2015, which was held in Altenberg .

In winter 2015/16 Anna Fernstädt started again in the Intercontinental Cup. After finishing second in the first race of the season in Lake Placid on November 19, 2015 , she was able to win on January 14 and 15, 2016 on her home track in Königssee , ahead of Latvian Lelde Priedulēna and Lanette Prediger from Canada. At the end of the season, she finished third in the overall standings behind Katie Uhlaender from the USA and the Canadian Lanette Prediger. At the German Championships 2016, which took place on the DKB ice canal in Altenberg between December 27 and 30, 2015 , she won her first DM medal behind Tina Hermann and Jacqueline Lölling with the bronze medal. At the Junior World Championships in 2016, she also won bronze behind Lelde Priedulēna from Latvia and Kimberley Bos from the Netherlands.

After winning both the European Cup competition in Sigulda and the two Intercontinental Cup competitions on the Königssee ice rink , Anna Fernstädt was promoted to the Skeleton World Cup in the 2016/17 season and completed her first World Cup race on December 2, 2016. In the race in Whistler , Canada , she finished eighth. After being fourth in Lake Placid and Altenberg , she narrowly missed a podium, she was able to celebrate her first podium in the World Cup at the World Cup in Königssee on January 27, 2017 on her home track with third place. Behind Jacqueline Lölling and Tina Hermann , she completed the triple success of the German skeleton pilots. At the end of the season she finished eighth in the overall World Cup. She also qualified for the 2017 Skeleton World Championship on her home track, the Königssee artificial ice rink. In fourth place, she just missed a medal in the individual. In the team competition she was part of the international team, which consisted of Romanian and German athletes, and together with this team she won the bronze medal behind the two German teams in this competition.

For the 2017/18 season she lost her starting place in the Skeleton World Cup and was only used in the 2017/18 Intercontinental Cup . After her victory in Whistler and the two victories in Calgary, she fought back her World Cup place and made it onto the podium for the second time in the Skeleton World Cup 2017/18 . At the home world cup on the DKB ice channel in Altenberg , she finished third behind Jacqueline Lölling and Tina Hermann . At the end of the season she finished tenth in the overall World Cup. At the 2018 Junior World Championships at the Olympia Bobrun St. Moritz – Celerina , she became Junior World Champion for the first time on January 25, 2018 ahead of Julija Kanakina from Russia and her teammate Susanne Kreher . In addition, she was nominated by the DOSB alongside Jacqueline Lölling and Tina Hermann for the 2018 Winter Olympics in the Korean city of Pyeongchang and prevailed against Sophia Griebel . At the Olympic Sliding Center , she finished sixth as the third-best German in the skeleton competition and thus rounded off a very good German team result.

On May 4, 2018, she announced that she would leave the BSD and Germany and return to her home country of the Czech Republic . She left it open whether her sporting career would continue or not. One month later, on June 6, she announced that she would be competing for the Czech Republic in the coming 2018/19 season. The Czech Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association did not register her for the Skeleton World Cup , but only for the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup . Since her association change, she has been trained by the former Polish bobsleigh driver Dawid Kupczyk and starts under the name Anna Fernstädtová.

On November 15, 2018, Anna Fernstädt competed in the Czech Republic for the first time. At the Intercontinental Cup on the artificial ice rink Bob-Rodel Igls she took sixth place. At the Intercontinetal Cup competitions in the Veltins ice arena on November 23 and 24, 2018, she took third place behind the Briton Laura Deas and the Austrian Janine Flock . On January 11, 2019, Anna Fernstädt wanted to start at the European Skeleton Championships on her home track. However, due to bad weather and too much snow, the women's and men's competitions had to be canceled and they were rescheduled in Innsbruck a week later. Anna Fernstädt did not start there, but took part in the Intercontinental Cup in Lake Placid , which was held on the same weekend. On January 19, 2019, she achieved her best Intercontinental Cup result for the Czech Republic with second place behind Susanne Kreher from Germany and Kelly Curtis from the USA.

At the end of the 2018/19 season , Anna Fernstädt won the overall standings in the Intercontinental Cup with 800 points ahead of Ashleigh Fay Pittaway from Great Britain and Megan Henry from the USA, thus ensuring a historic event for the first time in skeleton history was the national anthem at an award ceremony to hear from the Czech Republic. On February 3, 2019, she competed in the 2019 Junior World Championships on her home track in Königssee , winning ahead of the Belgian Kim Meylemans and the Brittish Ashley Fay Pittaway. As a result, she was only the third skeleton pilot after Kathleen Lorenz and Jacqueline Lölling to defend the junior world championship. By winning the Junior World Championship, she qualified for the 2019 World Cup in Whistler, Canada. In the German triple victory, she finished fourth and ensured the best result in history for a Czech skeleton pilot.

With her results in the 2018/19 season, Anna Fernstädt qualified for the 2019/20 Skeleton World Cup . Before the start of the season in the World Cup , she went to Stat in the Skeleton North American Cup . She made her debut in this racing series on November 20, 2019 in Lake Placid and finished second behind Katie Uhlaender and ahead of Jaclyn Narracott . One day later she finished second again, this time behind Katie Uhlaender and ahead of Mystique Ro . In Lake Placid, Anna Fernstädt celebrated her return to the Skeleton World Cup on December 7, 2019 and made her debut as a Czech starter in the World Cup. In this competition she finished seventh, which she was able to confirm a week later at the second competition in Lake Placid. On her home track in Königssee , she was able to achieve a top ten result with eighth place. At the end of the season she finished ninth in the overall World Cup ranking with 1,084 points.

On February 9, 2020 Anna Fernstädt started for the last time in a skeleton junior world championship and won the 2020 junior world championships in the Veltins ice arena in Winterberg ahead of the two German starters Susanne Kreher and Hannah Neise . This made Anna Fernstädt the first female skeleton pilot to be three times junior world champion. In the men's category, Nikita Tregubov managed to win the Junior World Championships three times in 2017. In total, he has even been Junior World Champion four times. As junior world champion, Anna Fernstädt received a personal right to start the 2020 bobsleigh and skeleton world championships in Altenberg, Saxony . After four runs, she took seventh place on the Altenberg racing sled and bobsleigh run .
