Marion Thees , née Marion Trott (born July 5, 1984 in Eisenach ), is a former German skeleton pilot .

Career

Marion Thees started luge at BRC 05 Friedrichroda in 1996 . In 2001 she switched to skeleton and made her debut in January 2003 in the European Skeleton Cup in a race in Königssee , where she immediately crossed the finish line in third place. She finished her second European Cup race in December of that year on her home track in Altenberg in second place behind Julia Eichhorn . This was followed by fourth place at the German Championships in 2004 in Königssee, her best result so far in this competition. In the European Cup she reached second place behind Julia Eichhorn in the 2003/04 season. The European Cups 2005/06 and 2006/07, which she won, were particularly successful for Thees. This included four European Cup races won in these four years, the first in November 2005 in Igls . In 2006 she also became German Junior Champion and third at the Junior World Championships in Igls. In her last season as a junior she was again German junior champion and junior world champion in 2007.

At the German championship in Altenberg 2008 she finished third and qualified for the first time for the European and World Championships. After her first World Cup race in St.Moritz in 2005, where she finished 15th, she contested a full World Cup season for the first time in 2007/08 . Her best result was a third place in Königssee, in the overall ranking she was ninth. At the Skeleton World Championships in 2008 she was seventh, at the European Championships ninth.

In the 2008/09 season Thees was always able to place in the first five races of the season in single digits. Thees won her first medal in international championships at the European Skeleton Championships in St. Moritz in 2009 , where she came second behind Shelley Rudman . Thees celebrated her first World Cup victory at the sixth race of the season in Whistler . With a second place in the penultimate race of the season in Park City , Thees surprisingly took the lead in the overall ranking of the World Cup, which she won with a victory in the last race in front of Shelley Rudman and Katie Uhlaender . In all races of the season Thees came in at least among the top seven starters and thus had the best record of all World Cup participants of the season, in which she was actually only the third German starter behind Anja Huber and Kerstin Szymkowiak . The 2008/2009 season was crowned by winning the Skeleton World Championship on the Lake Placid track in February. She was able to set the fastest time in the first three runs, and she also managed to set a new track record. She also won gold in the team competition together with skeleton pilot Frank Rommel and the two-man bobsled by Thomas Florschütz and Sandra Kiriasis .

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , she finished eighth.

In June 2010 she married Martin Thees and took his name.

In the 2010/11 season Thees achieved three podium finishes in the World Cup, including two wins. She finished fourth at the 2011 European Championships . Again twice gold in singles and with the team she won at the world championship .

After she started for the BSR Rennsteig Oberhof in the meantime , she returned to her hometown club BRC 05 Friedrichroda in 2011.

Thees is studying sports and rehabilitation science . Your trainer is Frank Schwarz.

On September 29, 2014, she announced that she would end her career and work as a trainer in the future.
