Schmid started skiing at the age of two. At the age of four, he regularly took part in the training session at the local ski club, which his mother had previously competed in the World Cup. After some successes at regional and regional level, he became a member of course group I a of the national team. On December 19, 2009 he made his debut with a 19th place in the slalom in St. Moritz in an FIS race . In February 2011 he took part in the European Youth Olympic Festival held in Liberec and achieved two placings in the top ten. Almost exactly one year later, Schmid started the European Cup for the first time in the 2011/2012 season on February 17, 2012 in Oberjoch . A few weeks later he was fifth in the giant slalom at the 2012 Junior World Championships in Roccaraso . After finishing in the top ten only once, he was able to celebrate his first victory in his 19th European Cup race on February 9, 2015, the giant slalom in Bad Hindelang.
Schmid, who has been a member of the Zoll Ski Team since 2013 , made his debut in the Alpine Ski World Cup when he competed in the giant slalom in Sölden on October 26, 2014 . He experienced a successful period in the spring of 2015 when, after his European Cup victory, he also became German junior champion in giant slalom and German champion in both slalom and giant slalom and won the bronze medal in the team competition with the German team at the junior world championship in Hafjell . At the World Cup giant slalom on December 9, 2017 in Val-d'Isère , France , Schmid finished sixth, scored his first World Cup points and qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . There he took part in the team competition and was eliminated in the first run of the giant slalom.
Schmid achieved his first World Cup podium on February 9, 2020 in the parallel giant slalom in Chamonix .
