Franziska Preuss (born March 11, 1994 in Wasserburg am Inn ) is a German biathlete .

Athletic career

At first Preuss was active in athletics , but in March 2009 her parents gave her a voucher for the "Experience Biathlon" program in Fritz Fischer's biathlon training camp. As a result, on Fischer's advice, she took part in the training base in Ruhpolding during the Whitsun holidays .

Beginnings (2010 to 2013)

In her second biathlon season 2010/11 she secured the title in the sprint at the German championships (classification J17) and also second places in both the individual and the relay. In addition, she also won the overall ranking of the 2011 German Cup (J17). Because of these achievements, she qualified for the C / D team of the German Ski Association and was nominated by the DSV for the European Youth Olympic Festival held in Liberec , Czech Republic in February 2011 . There she missed a podium finish. Preuss achieved her greatest successes to date just under a year later in January 2012 when she won three gold and one silver medals at the first Winter Youth Olympic Games and became the most successful athlete in the competitions. At the Junior World Championships that followed about a month later in Kontiolahti , Finland , she finished tenth in singles and sixth in relay. She reached 36th place in the sprint and 29th place in the pursuit.

In September 2012, she secured first place in the mass start and second place in special cross-country skiing at the German Junior Championships in Oberhof . With good performances in the German Cup, she qualified for the Junior World Championships in Obertilliach at the beginning of January 2013 . At the start she finished fifth in the sprint when her teammate Laura Dahlmeier won and won the bronze medal in the subsequent pursuit and in the individual race. With the relay she was first and won her third medal overall.

She made her first start in the women's field in February 2013 at the European Championships in Bansko. After a moderate individual competition, she reached fifth place in the sprint. In the pursuit race that followed she was able to improve to second place and became vice European champion behind Monika Hojnisz from Poland. The biggest success of the European Championship was the relay competition, in which she was European champion with Nicole Wötzel , Vanessa Hinz and Karolin Horchler before the Czech Republic. At the German Championships in Langdorf and Ruhpolding in September 2013 she won the pursuit, individual and mass start titles.

Debut in the World Cup and Olympic Games (2013/2014)

Preuss at the World Cup in Oberhof in January 2018

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season , Preuss was accepted into the World Cup team. In her first race, an individual in Östersund , she finished 44th. In Annecy-Le Grand Bornand she achieved 6th place in the sprint and in the relay race she won her first World Cup victory as a starter, together with Andrea Henkel , Franziska Hildebrand and Laura Dahlmeier . On January 12th, 2014 in Ruhpolding she achieved 4th place in the pursuit with a mistake and a very good mileage and thus her best career result so far. In February 2014, she took part in the biathlon competitions of the Winter Olympics in Sochi . After a 41st place in the sprint and a 40th place in the pursuit race, Preuss wanted to forego a start in the individual race. At the insistence of the coach, she started and was taken out of the race after five shooting errors in the third lap. In a conclusion on the Olympic Games and the situation in the German women's team, Magdalena Neuner stated that Preuss had ended the individual race "with a nervous breakdown" and that the coaches had "forced her to run". Before the relay race, the German women's team was impressed by the positive doping test by Evi Sachsenbacher-Stehle . Franziska Preuss fell as the starting runner on the first lap of the race. As a result, snow got into the sighting device of her weapon, which meant an additional loss of time at the shooting range. However, she kept her nerve in both prone and standing shooting, observed all safety rules when cleaning the sighting device and did not afford a penalty loop. In eleventh place, she handed over to the experienced Andrea Henkel, who lost three additional places. Neither Franziska Hildebrand nor Laura Dahlmeier were able to change the result significantly. In the end, the team reached eleventh place with a total deficit of almost four minutes on the victorious women from Ukraine .

World Championship Gold and Mass Start World Cup (since 2014)

Preuss at the World Cup in Oberhof in January 2018

In the 2014/15 season Preuss started again in the World Cup and won her third season World Cup victory as the final runner in Hochfilzen , together with her teammates Luise Kummer , Franziska Hildebrand and Vanessa Hinz . In Ruhpolding , Preuss came second in the mass start and was on the podium for the first time in an individual World Cup race. At the 2015 Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti , Finland , the relay started with a similar line-up as at the Olympic Games. Andrea Henkel , who has since resigned , was replaced by Vanessa Hinz. Franziska Hildebrand, the most experienced athlete on the team, took over the starting position. Franziska Preuss shortened the small gap of just 10.4 seconds to 7.6 seconds. Vanessa Hinz finally brought the relay into the lead, which Laura Dahlmeier was able to expand until the end of the race. Franziska Preuss won the silver medal in the mass start and was the youngest biathlete to take on the red jersey in the mass start. Due to her consistently good performance in this discipline, she also won the World Cup ranking in the mass start in addition to the silver medal.

The 2015/16 season got off to a similarly successful start for Preuss. Of the first eight races she was able to finish four in the top ten. She could no longer take part in the competitions in Ruhpolding due to a hairline crack in her tailbone. She had already contracted this at the first World Cup in Östersund , Sweden , but a diagnosis only followed later. After a long break, she only took part in World Cup races again in Canmore, Canada . She reached sixth place in the sprint and won the mixed relay together with Franziska Hildebrand , Arnd Peiffer and Simon Schempp . In Presque Isle she was third in the season together with Luise Kummer , Miriam Gössner and Karolin Horchler . At the Biathlon World Championships in Oslo , Norway , she won the silver medal in the mixed relay with the same line-up as in Canmore and bronze in the relay competition together with Franziska Hildebrand, Maren Hammerschmidt and Laura Dahlmeier .

With a fourth place in the first race of the season, the individual competition in the Swedish Östersund , she launched successfully in the Biathlon World Cup 2016/17 and secured with this result, the nomination for the World Championships in Hochfilzen . Due to several illnesses, she missed the competitions in Pokljuka , Oberhof and Antholz . Nevertheless, she achieved good results , especially with three top 10 placements in Nové Město na Moravě , and won the relay race at the Home World Cup in Ruhpolding together with Vanessa Hinz , Maren Hammerschmidt and Laura Dahlmeier. At the beginning of February, Franziska Preuss canceled her participation in the World Championships because she was not physically able to participate in the competitions again - especially after she caught the flu again shortly after the World Cup in Ruhpolding. During the World Championships, Franziska Preuss announced that she would end the season prematurely for health reasons. Shortly thereafter, she underwent an operation that had become necessary after a sinus infection .

Franziska Preuss started the 2018/19 season with four top ten placements in Hochfilzen , Pokljuka , Nove Mesto and Oberhof . In Ruhpolding she celebrated her first World Cup victory on January 20th thanks to a faultless shooting in the mass start. With the women's relay she took second place in Oberhof and third in Ruhpolding.

Private life

Preuss comes from Albaching and has moved her residence near her training base in Ruhpolding . She attended the state technical college in Wasserburg am Inn and graduated from high school in 2012. On August 1, 2012, she was accepted into the customs ski team and began training in simple duty as a customs officer candidate .

The biathlete has been in a relationship with biathlete Simon Schempp since winter 2015/16 .
