Miriam Neureuther (* 21st June 1990 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen as Miriam Gössner ) is a former German biathlete and cross-country skier . Her career in winter sports did not begin on cross-country skis, but in alpine skiing . However, after several teeth were knocked out by a slalom pole at the age of fourteen , this initially seemed to prevent further activities in skiing. Since she could not go on the slopes for a long time, she started cross-country skiing. After a few tests, she finally switched to the biathlete camp. Miriam Neureuther was employed as a competitive athlete at the Federal Customs Administration as the first customs officer .
Athletic career
biathlon
Beginnings (2008 to 2012)
At the 2008 Biathlon Junior World Championships in Ruhpolding , Miriam Neureuther won her first gold medal with the relay. The following year she won at the Biathlon Junior World Championships 2009 at the Canadian Canmore despite eight shooting errors gold in pursuit. In the sprint race she won silver behind Nicole Wötzel , in the individual race she came fourth.
At the start of the 2009/10 Biathlon World Cup in Östersund , Neureuther made her World Cup debut in the individual competition in 73rd place, and finished the sprint in 58th place. Since she saw no chance of qualifying for the 2010 Winter Olympics in biathlon , she concentrated then went to cross-country training and took part in the Tour de Ski 2009/10 and the Olympic Games in Vancouver as a cross-country skier.
From the beginning of the 2010/11 biathlon world cup season , Neureuther was part of the world cup team, at the start in Östersund she was 39th in the individual and won points in the biathlon world cup for the first time . In the sprint two days later, Neureuther shone with the best running time and also missed out. Nevertheless, she was still beaten by Kaisa Mäkäräinen because when shooting prone she repeated a cartridge before the shot from the magazine and therefore had to reload. The surprising second place in her fourth race was her first top ten and podium finish in the World Cup. Two days later, she was able to repeat this placement in the persecution. This was followed by 13 races, in which she finished eleven times in the points, but could not build on these good performances mostly because of poorer shooting performance. Neureuther's mileage was mostly found in the top of the runners. Only in Fort Kent did she achieve another top result - again as runner-up in a German triple victory behind Andrea Henkel and in front of Magdalena Neuner . At the Biathlon World Championships 2011 in Chanty-Mansiysk, Neureuther was world champion in the relay together with Andrea Henkel, Tina Bachmann and Magdalena Neuner.
In the 2011/12 Biathlon World Cup , Neureuther was unable to consistently match the mileage of the previous season, and the poor shooting performance again prevented good placements. Towards the middle of the season, changes to the weapon (extension of the barrel and thus the line of sight) were attempted to achieve better results at the shooting range. Neureuther also hired the mental trainer, with whom Magdalena Neuner worked successfully, at her own expense. The measures were successful, but the better shooting performance was not enough for podium placements. After all, Neureuther improved the hit accuracy from 56 percent in the previous season to 68 percent. At the end of the season it was announced that work on the young athlete's shooting would continue with a new weapon and other measures. Neureuther reached the 27th place overall in the World Cup and with the sixth place in the sprint in Kontiolahti , Finland , she recorded her only top 10 placement of the season.
The two relay operations went much better, however. Neureuther only needed two reload cartridges for prone shooting, while she only had to reload once for standing shooting. In Antholz, the relay team only achieved sixth place after two penalties by their teammates and twelve spare rounds, at the Biathlon World Championships 2012 in Ruhpolding they won the gold medal - as in the previous year with Henkel, Bachmann and Neuner.
Breakthrough and Serious Injury (2012 to 2014)
In preparation for the 2012/13 season , Neureuther worked on her running style and had extensive changes made to her weapon. Miriam Neureuther changed her diet because she was diagnosed with lactose intolerance and wheat intolerance . In addition, a jaw operation was necessary in spring 2012, during which bone grafting was carried out in the jaw. Neureuther had suffered a slalom accident at the age of 14 in which she had lost several teeth that had to be replaced with dentures that were fixed in the jaw with titanium screws. This triggered a purulent inflammation in the jaw that had decomposed it. There were many critical voices about her weight loss of about ten kilograms, but at the beginning of the new season Neureuther was again in strong running form. In addition to the equally fast runners Kaisa Mäkäräinen and Darja Domratschawa, she regularly ensured the best runs in the field. But as in the previous year, shooting errors initially prevented podium placements. In the Pokljuka sprint on December 14, 2012, however, she secured second place behind the faultless Czech Gabriela Soukalová, only two seconds behind, thanks to her fastest time . On the following day, she managed to win her first individual World Cup in the pursuit, even though she had to run five penalty loops in contrast to Gabriela Soukalová, who was second again without mistakes. On the last day of competition in Pokljuka, she finished second in the mass start behind Tora Berger . In January 2013 she was third in the Oberhof (Thuringia) together with Nadine Horchler , Tina Bachmann and Franziska Hildebrand . Two days later she won the sprint ahead of Tora Berger and Andrea Henkel. The following weekend in Ruhpolding she ran the fastest time in the sprint, which meant her third World Cup victory with just one shooting error.
Before the 2013/14 season, Neureuther was seriously injured in a bicycle accident near Vinstra (Norway) in mid-May . She broke four lumbar vertebrae and suffered a disc injury. As a result, Neureuther not only had to postpone the start of the Olympic preparation by three months, but also had to cancel the German biathlon championships . In order to improve her moderate shooting performance in recent years, Neureuther also worked in preparation with the former shooting coach Ole Einar Bjørndalens , Joar Himle.
On January 4, 2014, at a press conference during the Biathlon World Cup in Oberhof , she announced that, due to persistent pain, she had come to the decision to first try to get well. You could therefore not take part in the Olympic Winter Games . In the rest of the 2013/14 season , she did not start in the World Cup.
Difficult return to the World Cup and switch to cross-country skiing (2014 to 2018)
Neureuther returned to the World Cup at the start of the 2014/15 season in Östersund . In terms of running, she had taken a step forward after her accident, but was still a long way from her previous performances and those of the world's best. In connection with her still very poor shooting performance, she never reached the points in the first competitions, after a 93rd place in the sprint in Hochfilzen and a 70th place in the sprint in Pokljuka , she clearly failed to qualify for the pursuit competition twice in a row. Because of these achievements, she was transferred to the second-rate IBU Cup . Neureuther should have positive experiences there, without the great pressure from the public and the media, and create a mental breakthrough, especially at the shooting range. After three victories in the competitions in Duszniki-Zdrój and in Ridnaun , she returned to the World Cup team. At the following three World Cup stations she got the opportunity to show the very good results from the IBU Cup in the World Cup and at the same time qualify for the World Cup in Kontiolahti, Finland. With a 24th place in the Antholz sprint as the best result, she clearly missed both of these goals. She was then not nominated for the World Championships and instead started again in the IBU Cup. In Canmore , Canada , she was unable to build on the good results of the last races, but her overall placement gave her a personal right to start the last World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia , and joined Karolin Horchler to strengthen the women's team as the seventh or eighth woman. With a 39th place in the pursuit competition, she just reached the points in one race. She did not qualify for the mass start.
The national coach for women, Gerald Hönig, saw her running form still increasing, but criticized Neureuther's personal commitment in shooting training in an interview with the Upper Bavarian Volksblatt with the words: “In shooting training, I sometimes want a little more consistency, a little more Independence to deal with the weapon, the subject of shooting. "
Shortly afterwards it became known that Miriam Neureuther is training again with Joar Himle in Norway, this summer together with Kaisa Mäkäräinen .
In the next biathlon season she started with three places in the points in Östersund . In the sprint of Hochfilzen she was able to secure a podium place for the first time since the Biathlon World Cup 2012/13 with a 3rd place. In Ruhpolding , she was nominated for a relay race for the first time after her serious fall. Neureuther had to go twice into the penalty loop while lying flat and handed over in eleventh place, almost two minutes behind Maren Hammerschmidt . With a fastest run time and a good performance at the shooting range, however, she was able to shorten the gap to less than 30 seconds and bring the relay back on course for the podium in second place. Final runner Laura Dahlmeier also finished the season on this place after she had to admit defeat to Olena Pidhruschna in the finish sprint . In the course of the season she achieved - in addition to third place in the Hochfilzen sprint - with a 10th place in the Antholz sprint and an 8th place in the mass start in Canmore in a total of only three races, a top 10 position. In five races she was classified outside of the points. In Antholz, she played the relay together with Karolin Horchler , Vanessa Hinz and Franziska Hildebrand , which, however, only crossed the finish line in tenth place after one penalty loop through Hinz and Neureuther. In the US Presque Isle she was set up for the third time this season for a season. She took over the race from Franziska Preuss and Luise Kummer in second place, had to complete a penalty loop after the standing attack as before in Hochfilzen and only sent Karolin Horchler into the race in fifth place. However, this prevailed against the competition with only one shooting error, compensated for Neureuther's deficit and brought the German team back on the podium with third place. Thanks to the good result in the Hochfilzen sprint, Neureuther was nominated to take part in the World Championships in Oslo, Norway . There it was not used in any race. Neureuther finished the season in 23rd place in the overall World Cup.
In preparation for the 2016/17 World Cup , Neureuther had a new stock built for her weapon, but not from Sandro Brislinger, who as a gunsmith usually looks after German biathletes. “I wanted something new for myself, for my head, basically a little new start,” Neureuther explained this decision. The first World Cup of the season in Sweden , however, Östersund, these changes did not get paid. In sometimes difficult conditions at the shooting range, she only achieved a hit rate of 54%. As their running times were in some cases well outside the ten fastest in a race, a 37th place in the sprint was the only result within the points. In Pokljuka , both their hit rate and their times on the trail improved. With no wind at the shooting she finished the sprint with only one error and the 10th term to rank 10, in the pursuit, she was with five penalties 25 at the end In January 2017 Neureuther was by the DSV required criteria for a nomination for the Biathlon World Championships (one individual result under the best eight of a race or two results under the best 15 athletes) and was subsequently no longer set up for the World Cup in Antholz . Instead, they took the crew of the second-rate IBU Cup to the European Championships in the Polish Duszniki-Zdroj . Shortly after the end of the European Championship, Neureuther announced that she would end the competition season early. The reason she gave was an inflammation of the frontal sinus , which had to be treated surgically.
To prepare for the 2017/18 season , Miriam Neureuther was assigned to the B-squad and the second highest course group 1b of the DSV , although at that time it was already known that she was pregnant. Her daughter was born in October 2017 and she did not contest a biathlon race that winter. For the summer of 2018 she was assigned to the supplementary cross-country skiers squad by the DSV.
Cross-country skiing
Sporadic appearances in the World Cup and title fights (2009 to 2013)
Miriam Neureuther was surprisingly nominated for the cross-country sprint shortly before the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2009 because of her strong performance in the cross- country ski run . In qualifying for the sprint race, she finished on a promising 17th place, but then dropped out in the quarterfinals and was 20th at the end of the day. After this performance and Stefanie Böhler's illness-related departure , Neureuther was also nominated for the relay competition. With the fastest time of all runners on her lap, she reduced the deficit of the German team by 55 seconds and thus contributed a large part to winning the silver medal. Following the world championship, Neureuther was also used in the cross-country world cup in Lahti, as she was unable to contest biathlon competitions due to a thumb injury. She finished 15th in the sprint and 27th in the 10 km race. Neureuther thus won World Cup points at both starts.
Since she saw no chance due to her results in the Biathlon World Cup 2009/10 to qualify in this discipline for the Olympic Winter Games 2010 , she concentrated on cross-country training and took part in the Tour de Ski 2009/10 . With fifth place in the prologue, she qualified for the Olympic Games in Vancouver as a cross-country skier. On February 25, 2010 Neureuther won the silver medal in the Olympic cross-country relay competition together with Katrin Zeller , Evi Sachsenbacher-Stehle and Claudia Nystad .
Following the Biathlon World Championships 2013 in Nové Město na Moravě , Neureuther competed in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme in both the 4 × 5 km relay race and the 10 km freestyle. In the 10 km freestyle race, Neureuther missed the bronze medal by just half a second and reached fourth place. Neureuther thus achieved the best placement of all German starters in cross-country skiing in all races of the World Ski Championships. She finished the season as the final runner in seventh place.
New start as an active cross-country skier and end of career (2018 to 2019)
After the birth of her daughter in October 2017, Neureuther returned to active competitive sports in preparation for the winter of 2018/19. She was assigned to the supplementary team of the DSV in the area of cross-country skiing. On September 17, 2019, she announced her retirement from active competitive sports.
Mountain bike
On June 11, 2016, she competed in the German sprint mountain bike championships in Bodenmais for the first time , and came second in the small final, making her sixth overall.
Awards
In 2009 Miriam Neureuther received the Bavarian Sports Prize awarded by the Bavarian State Government in the category of outstanding young athletes . When she was voted Junior Sportswoman of the Year 2009 by the German Sports Aid Foundation , she took second place. On April 30, 2010, she was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Horst Köhler .
