Nadine Horchler (born June 21, 1986 in Arolsen ) is a former German biathlete .

In 2016, she became European champion in Tyumen, Russia, and is two-time German biathlon champion . Her greatest successes also include the overall victory of the IBU Cup in the 2015/16 season , an individual World Cup victory in the mass start in Antholz in January 2017 and two further victories in the World Cup with the German women's relay.

Personal

Nadine Horchler has three younger siblings, two sisters and one brother. Her sister Karolin is also a biathlete. Nadine Horchler started for SC Willingen , but moved to Mittenwald and was trained there by Bernhard Kröll. She belonged to the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr and most recently held the rank of sergeant . In December 2015 she successfully passed the examination to become a "naturopath for psychotherapy". In 2019 she began studying psychology at a private university in Hall in Tirol .

Athletic career

Beginnings (2006 to 2011)

Nadine Horchler had her first international assignments in 2006 as part of the IBU Junior Cup . In Obertilliach she achieved a fourth and two fifth places in her first four races. At the German Championships in 2008 Horchler achieved the third-best time in the relay race with Carolin Hennecke and Magdalena Neuner , but did not win a medal because this relay started out of competition. It was not until the 2009/10 season that she returned to international appearances in the IBU Cup after 2006. In her first sprint in Altenberg , she won first points in 27th place.

After she was removed from the Bundeswehr's sports promotion group in 2010 , Nadine Horchler was faced with the decision whether to continue her career as a biathlete. However, she did not want to turn her back on competitive sports so early and continue her career as long as the corresponding successes arise. In order to be able to continue to afford competitive sport, she worked in a pizzeria in the summer, and her friend and training partner Magdalena Neuner also supported her with material and equipment.

The 2010 German Championships went with good results , where she was eighth in the cup standings and was able to leave several well-known German biathletes behind. In IBU Cup 2010/11 Horchler ran in Martell for a single behind Yevgeniya Sedova and Kjersti Isaksen than third place for the first time on a podium place. Further good results followed in the further course of the season. In Altenberg she was able to improve her best performance in both the sprint and the pursuit up to a second place behind Iris Waldhuber . Horchler brought home two bronze medals from the 2011 European Biathlon Championships . In addition to the relay medal - together with Franziska Hildebrand , Susann König and Juliane Döll - she made it onto the podium in the pursuit, despite being thirteenth in the sprint, 1: 22.2 minutes behind. Thanks to her good performance in the IBU Cup, Horchler qualified for the World Cup final of the 2010/11 season in Oslo in mid-March . She finished her World Cup debut in the sprint on Holmenkollen with a shooting error in 32nd place and her first nine World Cup points. In the pursuit, she even improved to 27th place with three shooting errors.

First World Cup appearances (2011, 2012)

In the summer of 2011 at the German Championships , Nadine Horchler showed constant performances and was third in the sprint and individual. She also took third place in the internal cup classification. Together with Carolin Hennecke and Franziska Hildebrand , Horchler got the chance to prove himself in the World Cup. However, with a 35th place in the sprint and a 39th place in the pursuit, she had to admit defeat to Hildebrand. Because of these achievements, Nadine Horchler again spent most of the winter in the IBU Cup. In her first six races she took four podium places, three of them in the sprint, which is why she was preferred to Sabrina Buchholz in Antholz . With a 36th place she again only just reached the points. Back in the IBU Cup, she could not build on the good results, the best result was a tenth place in Canmore . Despite six exuberant races, she finished fourth in the overall standings. At the Biathlon European Championship in Osrblie , he just missed the medal ranks with a fourth place in the sprint and a fifth in the individual competition. As in the previous year, she won the bronze medal in the relay together with Maren Hammerschmidt , Carolin Hennecke and Juliane Döll .

At the German championships in summer 2012 Horchler won her first national title. After she achieved fourth place in the Altenberg sprint, one day later she secured the bronze medal in the pursuit. In the individual, she only missed one target at the shooting range in partly windy conditions. So she secured the gold medal ahead of Andrea Henkel and Franziska Hildebrand. In the mass start she won the silver medal.

World Cup participation and Olympic qualification (2012 to 2014)

From the beginning of the 2012/2013 season , Horchler was part of the German World Cup team. A tenth place in the pursuit in Hochfilzen was her first top ten placement in the World Cup. After a fourth place in Hochfilzen in her first season in the World Cup, she secured her first podium in the World Cup as the final runner with Tina Bachmann , Miriam Gössner and Franziska Hildebrand in front of a home crowd in Oberhof . The basis for her good results were her consistently good shooting performance, because she couldn't keep up with the world's best in terms of running. In mid-January, Nadine Horchler achieved fifth place in the sprint race and in the subsequent pursuit in Antholz and thus the best positions of her career to date. In the relay race she was again clear and won her first World Cup race together with Franziska Hildebrand, Miriam Gössner and Andrea Henkel . At the 2013 World Championships in Nové Město , Czech Republic , she clearly missed qualifying for the pursuit race with an 84th place in the sprint, and 28th place in the individual competition. It was not taken into account for the women's relay, which reached 5th place. At the remaining World Cup races in Sochi , Khanty-Mansiysk and Oslo , with one exception, she always reached the points, but a 20th place in the sprint in Khanty-Mansiysk remained the best result. At the end of the season she finished 25th in the overall World Cup.

In the 2013/2014 season , Horchler was no longer nominated for the World Cup team. In December she won the IBU Sprint and Pursuit Cup in Obertilliach and the individual race and the sprint in Ruhpolding as part of the German Cup . In Oberhof, she received a World Cup assignment to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics. With a 29th place in sprint and pursuit, she clearly missed the internal qualification criteria of the DSV. Back in the IBU Cup, she won another race in Ridnaun . When the German women's team started the first World Cup race after the Olympic Games in Pokljuka, Slovenia , although there are six starting places available per race, they said: “Hello, I'm sitting there and have to take the free starting place from Watch the TV. Sad but true as the leader in the IBU overall standings. lg ”on their Facebook page expresses their displeasure. Horchler was then nominated by head coach Uwe Müssiggang for the final races of the season in Kontiolahti, Finland, and Oslo, Norway . However, she was unable to build on her good results and good mileage from the IBU Cup at these races. In four races she never reached the points, and in Oslo she could not qualify for the pursuit race. Two weeks after the end of the World Cup season, she commented on the poor results in the World Cup in an interview. After a serious fall during training just before the races in Kontiolahti, she suffered a bruised rib and a bruise of the shoulder bone. A start was only possible with pain killers.

Overall win IBU Cup and EM gold (2014 to 2016)

For the 2014/15 season , Nadine Horchler did not receive any management status for the DSV national team. After a good preparation for the season in summer, however, she again failed to make the leap into the World Cup team. The results in the IBU Cup were also worse compared to the previous season, and as a result they ended the season prematurely. Doctors later diagnosed her with overtraining , which was suspected to be the reason for the deterioration in her performance. However, she decided to try again and start in the 2015/16 season, although she was again not nominated for the DSV squad. After a mixed start in the IBU Cup 2015/16 and only one top 10 placement at the competitions in Idre and Ridnaun, her performance stabilized and she then almost exclusively achieved placements among the top ten athletes as well as several podium placements. At the European Biathlon Championships in Tyumen , Russia , she won the sprint race ahead of her sister Karolin in second and Annika Knoll in third. With a strong mileage, she was able to compensate for her shooting error in standing position and thus the loss of time due to a penalty loop on her faultless sister and secured the gold medal with a 12.7 second lead. Thanks to her consistently good performance, she won the overall ranking of the IBU Cup 2015/16 as well as the sprint ranking . Based on these results, she worked out a personal right to start the last World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia . In the sprint she reached the 31st place and improved in the pursuit competition to 29th place. She did not qualify for the mass start race.

First individual victory in the World Cup (2016 to 2018)

Due to her performances in the IBU Cup and at the European Championships, DSV's Nadine Horchler was reassigned to the B-team for the 2016/17 season . In the IBU Cup she started again with good performances, in addition to placements almost exclusively within the top 10, she reached the podium in Beitostølen and Ridnaun .

In January 2017 she replaced the sick Franziska Preuss at the World Cup in Oberhof and started a World Cup race for the first time ever with her sister Karolin . After a 35th place in the sprint, she improved to 17th place in the pursuit race despite four shooting errors. The basis for this improvement was the best running time within the German team.

At the World Cup in Antholz in South Tyrol, she moved into the team for Miriam Gössner , who was supposed to prepare for the European Championships . With 19th place in the individual competition, she only secured a place in the list for the following mass start. After some athletes did not start, Horchler was able to start the race with starting number 30 as the last athlete in the field. After four faultless shootings, she went on the last lap just behind the leader Gabriela Koukalová , prevailed against the Czech in the sprint to the finish and won her first World Cup race in front of her teammate Laura Dahlmeier , who Koukalová was able to overtake shortly before the finish. With this result, Nadine Horchler fulfilled the standard required by the DSV for the nomination for the 2017 World Championships (a result within the best 8 or two within the best 15 in an individual race). Although she was nominated, she should be available on call at home as a “substitute woman with a possible assignment in the second week” . After the World Cup in Antholz, she participated in the European Championships in Poland Duszniki-Zdroj part, but was not there to defend her gold medal in the sprint, the German team finished the European Championship without medals. Horchler, who was perceived by the organizers as one of the “draft horses” of the European Championships and was repeatedly highlighted alongside Russian Olympians and local athletes, nevertheless achieved good placings with fourth place in the sprint, nine in the pursuit and six in the mixed relay race. After Franziska Preuß had to cancel participation in the title fights due to illness, Horchler took part in the world championships in the first week. After a 46th place in the sprint, she improved to 32nd in the pursuit of individual races and she did not receive any races in the relay because Vanessa Hinz , Maren Hammerschmidt , Franziska Hildebrand and Laura Dahlmeier , who were well ahead of her in the World Cup, contested all races . She did not qualify for the mass start.

The last competitions of the winter in Pyeongchang , Kontiolahti and Oslo , Nadine Horchler also competed in the World Cup. In Pyeongchang it was set up for the women's relay after Franziska Preuss had ended the season prematurely, Vanessa Hinz had not traveled to South Korea due to illness and Laura Dahlmeier was spared. It was Horchler's first relay race to Antholz in the 2012/13 season , when she won the race together with Franziska Hildebrand , Miriam Gössner and Andrea Henkel , and the German women's team was victorious again in Korea. Despite a penalty loop by Denise Herrmann , Nadine Horchler, Maren Hammerschmidt and the final runner Franziska Hildebrand prevailed against the competition. Horchler competed in her first mixed relay race in the World Cup in Kontiolahti. Together with Maren Hammerschmidt, Benedikt Doll and Arnd Peiffer she came second.

For the Biathlon World Cup 2017/18 , Nadine Horchler was reassigned to the B squad, compared to the previous year, she moved up a training group and prepared for the winter in the training camps with the World Cup team. She again took part predominantly in races in the IBU Cup , won the individual competition in Bayerisch Eisenstein and was on the podium in four other races. She was not nominated for participation in the Winter Olympics. Because of her achievements, she qualified for participation in the World Cup finals in Tyumen , Russia , where she was European champion two years earlier . After a 39th place in the sprint, she improved to 12th place in the subsequent pursuit race. It was the first time that she and her sister Karolin competed in a World Cup race. This winter she also won the individual ranking of the IBU Cup for the first time .

Last years as an active biathlete (2018 to 2020)

In preparation for the 2018/19 Biathlon World Cup , Nadine Horchler took part in the training camps of the German World Cup team. After good results at the first IBU Cup of the season in Idre , Sweden , she was nominated for the first World Cup in Slovenia . She competed in other races in the IBU Cup , at the World Cup in Oberhof she replaced the sick Vanessa Hinz . At the European Championships , she won silver together with Janina Hettich , Lucas Fratzscher and Philipp Horn , just behind the victorious season from Sweden. Sweden used the European Championships as preparation for the home World Cup in Östersund, so in the Swedish relay there were only athletes who start exclusively in the World Cup. In the pursuit race Horchler won bronze, again behind two World Cup athletes , the winner Jekaterina Jurlowa-Percht and the Olympic champion Iryna Kryuko . In the individual race, she just missed the medal ranks in fourth, the race won Olympic and later world champion in this discipline, Hanna Öberg from Sweden, ahead of Julija Schurawok and Iryna Kryuko.

For the 2019/20 season , Horchler did not receive a squad status in the DSV and thus less financial support than many of her teammates. In May 2019, she announced that the 2019/20 season would be her last winter as an active biathlete. Due to her age and her achievements in the German championship, she was neither assigned to the World Cup nor the IBU Cup team, but competed in the third-class German Cup . There she was able to win five of nine races of the season and thus also the cup standings. On February 29, she competed in her last biathlon race at the mass start of the German Cup in Ruhpolding . With a total of five shooting errors, she finished second behind Hanna Kebinger from SC Partenkirchen . In addition to friends, family and athletes from their training group in Mittenwald, there was also a delegation from SC Willingen and the Hessian Ski Association. Nadine Horchler competed in her last race in a yellow, blue and white running suit for SC Willingen, and in the same suit she had completed her first cross-country run twenty years earlier.
