Athletic career

Active biathlete and trainer

As a biathlete, Müssiggang made it to the B national squad of the GDR . After his active career, he studied at the German University of Physical Culture in Leipzig and was in charge of the talent centers in the Karl-Marx-Stadt and Dresden districts as a trainer in the 1970s .

In 1980 Müssiggang's brother tried to escape from the GDR to the Federal Republic of Germany because he had fallen in love with a Western European. Uwe Müssiggang was then convicted as a confidante and spent a year in political prison. Since he was punished not only with a prison sentence but also with an occupational ban on 'rehabilitation', he worked for four years in a gardener as a gardener after his release to the GDR. After the unification of the two German ski associations, Müssiggang took over the women's team in 1991 together with his assistant trainer Harald Böse . Under their direction, Germany developed into one of the leading nations in women's biathlon and was instrumental in the growing popularity of this sport. While at the beginning of idleness as a trainer already successful athletes like Petra Schaaf or Antje Misersky in the squad were gradually with athletes such as Uschi Disl , Martina Zellner , Katrin Apel , Andrea Henkel , Martina Beck , Kati Wilhelm , Simone Hauswald or last Magdalena Neuner always again brought young talents to the top of the world, so that all the years the German team consisted of athletes with chances of top placements and still exists today.

At the beginning of 2006, Müssiggang was voted Trainer of the Year 2005 by his trainer colleagues and received the biathlon award for the second time. After 17 years of working together, Harald Böse ended his work as Müssiggang's assistant coach for reasons of age after the 2006/07 season. His successor was the previous C-squad coach Gerald Hönig . In 2010 Müssiggang was named Trainer of the Year . He has been the head coach of the German women's and men's teams since the 2010/2011 season. Gerald Hönig and Ricco Groß took over his duties with the women . During the Winter Olympics in Sochi, he announced his resignation at the end of the 2013/14 season.

At world championships they were successful with 22 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals. In total, the athletes supported by Müssiggang achieved 68 medals at major events.
