Village church St. Pankratius in Beggendorf

Beggendorf is a district of Baesweiler in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia . The head of the village is Ferdinand Reinartz.

history

Numerous finds of bricks, broken glass and other objects from Roman times suggest that there were at least two Roman manors in the vicinity of the village. Beggendorf was on one of the Roman side streets that opened up the fertile area of the Jülich Börde . This led from Eschweiler via Baesweiler and Geilenkirchen towards Roermond .

In 952 Beggendorf was mentioned for the first time in a document as "Villa Begina" when Archbishop Bruno of Cologne donated goods to the Cäcilienstift in Cologne.

In the Liber valoris , a directory from the beginning of the 14th century, the parish church of St. Pankratius is mentioned. Around 1500 Beggendorf consisted of five large courtyards and an unknown number of outbuildings.

With the French occupation of the Rhineland in 1794, the obligation to pay the Cäcilienstift in Cologne ended. Since the old church was very dilapidated, the new parish church was built in 1861–62. It is one of the countless neo-Gothic brick churches in the Rhineland. The architect was the royal master builder Kruse.

After severe damage in World War II, the church had to be extensively repaired. Among other things, the tower helmet was redesigned.
