Gerald Hönig (born September 4, 1958 in Tambach-Dietharz , Gotha district , GDR ) is a German biathlon trainer .

Life

Hönig is a member of the SV Motor Tambach-Dietharz sports club . Before he succeeded Harald Böse as assistant coach of the A-team in 2007, he was the coach of the C-team in Oberhof . During her active career, Hönig was a close confidante of the athlete Andrea Henkel .

After the resignation of Uwe Müssiggang , Hönig was appointed national coach for women from the 2014/15 season . During his time as the responsible national coach, the German biathletes won the Nations World Cup four times, the Relay World Cup three times, as well as the Mixed Relay World Cup, the overall World Cup, the Individual World Cup, the Pursuit World Cup and the Mass Start World Cup. The team won seven gold, five silver and three bronze medals in championships, followed by two gold and one bronze medals at the Winter Olympics. In the World Cup, the women won 25 individual, ten relay and two mixed relay races during this time.

In April 2018 it was announced that Hönig's contract as women's national coach would not be extended, instead he was appointed national shooting coach for all course groups. For the 2020/21 season, Hönig switched to the Austrian Ski Association . In addition to head coach Markus Fischer, he is also the coach of the women's team and is primarily responsible for the shooting sub-discipline.

Hönig is a member of the Technical Committee of the International Biathlon Union .
