Lucas Fratzscher (born July 6, 1994 in Suhl ) is a German biathlete . His greatest success so far is winning the overall ranking of the IBU Cup 2019/20 .

biography

Lucas Fratzscher grew up in Schleusingen . After he had practiced athletics up until then, he started biathlon at WSV Oberhof 05 at the age of nine . From 2007 he attended the Oberhof sports high school, where he graduated from high school in 2014. Since then he has been a member of the Bundeswehr sports promotion group in the Rennsteig barracks and is trained by Mark Kirchner and Marko Danz at the Thuringia Olympic base in Oberhof .

Lucas Fratzscher contested his first international races as part of the IBU Cup 2016/17 in Obertilliach . In the same winter he also took part in the European biathlon championships , and a 13th place in the sprint in Martell was his best result during the season . In the following season he could not improve this result, at the European Championships in Ridanna , he clearly missed the medal ranks again.

Season 2018/19 - First international successes and World Cup debut

At the German Championships 2018 , Fratzscher was able to secure an international starting place for the first time at the start of the season with three fourth places. He was also German champion with the Thuringian relay. In the opening race of the IBU Cup 2018/19 he achieved his international breakthrough and his first podium finish in the IBU Cup with a third place in the sprint in Idre . After a second place in Obertilliach, he was appointed to the German World Cup team for the first time. In January 2019, Fratzscher celebrated his debut in Oberhof , after four shooting errors, he only reached 93rd place out of 105 starters in the sprint. When he returned to the IBU Cup, he achieved another second place. At the 2019 European Biathlon Championships in Minsk , he showed below-average performance in the individual races, but won - together with Nadine Horchler , Janina Hettich and Philipp Horn - in the mixed relay race with silver, his first international medal. In the remainder of the IBU Cup season he won his first individual race in Martell , a German triple victory over Horn and Danilo Riethmüller in the sprint, and with several other top 10 places he was just one point ahead of Aristide Bègue in second place the overall ranking. As a result, he qualified for further World Cup appearances at the season finale in March 2019 in Oslo . These went much better than in Oberhof: He was able to qualify for the mass start. reached the points and two top 10 placements in all three races.

2019/20 season - overall IBU Cup victory

At the German Championships in 2019 , the Thuringian relay team repeated their previous year's success with Fratzscher. In the first race of the IBU Cup 2019/20 he celebrated his second career victory in the sprint in Sjusjøen . He also reached the podium in the two other races there. At the next but one IBU Cup station in Obertilliach, he finished second in the short singles and won together with Stefanie Scherer in the single mixed relay. Fratzscher went into the Christmas break as the clear leader in the overall standings and, as in the previous year, was nominated for the World Cup in Oberhof in January, where he again only achieved 86th place with four shooting errors. Back in the IBU Cup, he finished second in Osrblie with the German mixed relay . In February in Martell he reached three more individual podiums and two more top 10 placements. The 2020 European Championships , which were relocated to Minsk at short notice , went less well again, Fratzscher was unable to achieve a medal. At the subsequent IBU Cup final in the same place, he achieved results in the top ten in both sprints. With a 13th place in the final mass start, he was able to defend his lead in the overall standings with only one point ahead of Endre Strømsheim and secure the large crystal ball. In addition, he won the sprint classification. He was then nominated for the World Cup in Kontiolahti , where he did not achieve any points in sprint or pursuit. The subsequent season finale in Oslo was canceled without replacement due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
