The 27th European Biathlon Championships (officially: IBU Open European Championships Biathlon 2020 ) took place from February 24th to March 1st, 2020 in the Raubitschy winter sports complex near the Belarusian capital Minsk . Minsk already hosted the European Championships in 1998, 2004 and 2019 as well as the Biathlon World Championships in 1982 and 1990 .
The event was originally assigned to the Estonian Otepää , the venue for the 2010 and 2015 European Championships . Due to the lack of snow and warm weather, the competitions had to be canceled eleven days before the start. Minsk-Raubitschy, already planned as the regular venue for the IBU Cup final a week later, then agreed to take over the event.
However, since not all rounds could be covered with snow in Raubitschy, the competition program of the European Championships had to be adapted. Instead of the individual, the super sprint discipline introduced in 2018 was held for the first time.
Since the European Championships were held as "open" competitions, the field of participants was not limited to athletes from Europe. Individual athletes and teams from North and South America, Asia and Australia also took part in the competitions.
The championships were the highlight of the 2019/20 season of the IBU Cup . The results of the races also flowed into the overall ratings of the IBU Cup.
The 2020 Biathlon Junior European Championships took place separately from the European Championships and should be held in Hochfilzen from March 9th to 15th . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , only the sprint and the individual took place. After these races the European championships were ended.

The third-placed Norwegian mixed relay was disqualified after a complaint by the Belarusian team, initially due to a disability (IBU competition rules 11.3.4 k). After an objection by the Norwegians and another review of the images, the jury withdrew this decision about five hours after the end of the competition.
