The German relay with Korbinian Raschke , Matthias Dorfer and Steffen Bartscher was disqualified after the race. It was followed by the European Championships in Bansko , where Rees no longer competed in the juniors. He finished 34th in the sprint and 30th in the pursuit race.

Nationally, Rees was sixth with the relay at the 2011 German Championships , seventh with the mixed relay, in 2012 sixth in the sprint, seventh in the pursuit and eighth with the mixed relay.

After a second place in the IBU Cup sprint in Beitostølen , Rees celebrated his World Cup debut in the individual competition in Östersund, Sweden in December 2016 with a 48th place. This was followed by a 57th place in the sprint competition and a 36th place in the pursuit, for which he got five World Cup points. In March 2017 he returned to the World Cup and finished 13th in the sprint in Pyeongchang . In Kontiolahti he was able to confirm this performance with a 12th place in the sprint, in the subsequent pursuit he was 14th. Together with Laura Dahlmeier , Rees took third place in the single mixed relay, his first podium.

Roman Rees was a member of the German squad at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. There he was scheduled for a start in the individual race over 20 km instead of the pausing Benedikt Doll . However, since he was ill, Johannes Kühn started and Rees did not participate in the Olympic Games.

At the 2019 Biathlon World Championships in Östersund , he won the silver medal with the relay.
