The Poronai ( Russian Поронай ) is 350 km the longest river on the Sakhalin Island in the Far East of Russia .

River course

The Poronai rises in the central part of the island on the western flank of the 1100  m Nabilski ridge , which belongs to the Eastern Sakhalin Mountains . It flows north for a few kilometers, then west and reaches the Tym Poronai lowland , which extends through the entire north and central part of the island and separates the east from the western Sakhalin Mountains. The Poronai flows strongly meandering through the 30 to 50 kilometers wide, swampy lowland in a southerly direction until it flows into the Terpenija Bay ("Patience Bay") of the Sea of Okhotsk near the city of Poronaisk , which is named after it . A good 15 km above the estuary branches off the smaller Taranka (also Kjonga ) estuary, which joins the Terpenija Bay 6 km northeast of the main arm.

Hydrology

The catchment area of the river covers 7990 km². The most important tributaries flow into the Poronai from the right: Onorka (length 77 km), Orlowka (83 km) and Leonidowka (95 km). The longest left tributary is the Schitnitsa (61 km).

The annual mean flow rate of the Poronai is 120 m³ / s. The river freezes over from November to April, after which it leads to floods until June.

The Poronai flows through the city ​​districts of Tymovskoye , Smirnych and Poronaisk of the Sakhalin Oblast . With the exception of Poronaisk, there are no large towns directly on the river due to the swampy terrain. On the right side of the valley, however, at a distance of 3 to 20 kilometers from the river, the narrow-gauge railway line ( cape gauge 1067 mm) Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk  - Nogliki , the main route of the former Sakhalin Railway , as well as the regional road R487, which also connects the Sakhalin Island in northern Crossed south direction. The middle course of the river crosses the road on the only bridges and the Pobedino  - Pervomaisk railway line, which was also converted to a cape gauge around 1990 from the 750 mm gauge .

Fish fauna

The Poronai is a spawning water for various salmon fish . Come in the river a. the following species of fish: masu salmon , pink salmon , chum salmon , coho salmon , Dolly Varden trout , Salvelinus white-spotted charr and taimen .
