Career
Iris Schwabl started for the ATV Irdning and was trained by Reinhard Gösweiner for a long time. She was a biathlete from 1996 and started for Austria in 2002. Schwabl was very successful as a junior. She ran her first Junior World Championships in 2005 in Kontiolahti , without reaching top ten placements. For the new season she began to run in the Junior European Cup. At the end of the season she started at the World Cup in Presque Isle and surprisingly won the gold medal there with the Austrian relay. After finishing fourth in the individual and fifth in the sprint, she also won silver in the pursuit behind Tamara Baric. The 2007 Junior World Championships were less successful for the Austrian. In Martell Schwabl achieved no results below the first 20. The European Junior Championship of the year in Bansko was much better . In the individual behind Jekaterina Schumilowa and in the sprint behind Swetlana Slepzowa she won silver, in the pursuit she was able to win the title. The Junior European Championship in 2008 again brought three top ten placements, including silver in the individual behind Elise Ringen . At her last Junior World Championships in Ruhpolding , she was also able to win a medal in individual, bronze behind Susann König and Marie-Laure Brunet . In 2007 in particular, there were also several placements among the top ten in the Junior European Cup. In 2008, she won a pursuit race in Cesana San Sicario after finishing third in the sprint to get her first podium finish. There are also various national youth and junior championship titles.
Schwabl made her debut in the Biathlon World Cup at the beginning of the 2007/08 season in Kontiolahti. In the first individual of the season, she finished 66th. The best result so far is a 37th place in the sprint in Pokljuka . At the end of the season, she started in the Biathlon European Cup for the first time and was fifth in the sprint and fourth in the pursuit. Up until the 2008/10 season , the Austrian started as the best Austrian biathlete, quite unchallenged in the World Cup. The highlights were the 2009 Biathlon World Championships in Pyeongchang , where she was 69th in the individual, 47th in the sprint and 51st in the pursuit, and the leadership of the Austrian women's relay at the start of the 2009/10 season . In Östersund , the Austrian women were able to start a relay for the first time. With Ramona Düringer , Romana Schrempf and Kerstin Muschet she reached 17th out of 20 places. She also took part in the European Biathlon Championships in 2009 in Ufa and in 2010 in Otepää . In Russia she was 12th in the individual, in Estonia 18th in the sprint and 23rd in the pursuit. In the 2010/11 season Schwabl temporarily lost her World Cup place to Romana Schrempf and entered the IBU Cup . Although the performances there were mixed at first, she found her way back on the road to success with two victories in the sprint and pursuit of Altenberg . At the Biathlon World Championships 2011 in Khanty-Mansiysk she was 32nd of the individual and won world cup points for the first time. In the sprint she was 77th, with Ramona Düringer, Dominik Landertinger and Christoph Sumann in the mixed relay race seventh.
So far, Iris Schwabl has won a total of 14 Austrian championship titles. In 2005 she won in the pursuit and in the relay, in 2008 in the individual, in the mass start and in the sprint, in 2009 she won the individual, pursuit and sprint and in 2010 she was Austrian champion in the pursuit, in the individual on roller skis and with the relay. Other titles followed in pursuit (2011), sprint (2012) and with the relay (2013).
She ended her active career at the end of 2014. She contested her last World Cup race in 2014 on the Pokljuka plateau. It was the women's sprint in which her teammate Katharina Innerhofer became the first Austrian biathlete to win a World Cup race.
