Stephan Leyhe (born January 5, 1992 in Schwalefeld ) is a German ski jumper . His greatest successes so far are the world championship title in the team competition at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 , winning the silver medal in the team competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, and third place in the 2018/19 Four Hills Tournament .

Career

Leyhe made his international debut at the age of 14 at the FIS races at the end of September 2006 in Oberstdorf . In 2007 he won the overall German Cup. On August 4, 2007, at the age of only 15, he started in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup for the first time . In the summer jumping competition in Oberstdorf, he finished 40th. In the second competition he was also well behind the points with 52nd place. During the 2007/08 season Leyhe gained experience in FIS races all over Europe and achieved several top 10 placements. In February 2008 he became German youth champion. He was also OPA champion in singles and reached third place with the team at the OPA games. After he was on the podium again in March in the Alpine Cup and was able to win the jumping in Bois-d'Amont , he was part of the team in the Alpine Cup the following season. Although he was able to win the overall German Cup again, he had no chance in the Alpine Cup. The best place was a 26th place in Predazzo .

After a short excursion in the FIS Cup in January 2009 in Lauscha , where he surprisingly finished tenth, he started successfully in junior competitions in February and March. Then at the end of the season on March 22, 2009 in Kuusamo he got the chance to start again in the Continental Cup and jumped straight away to 28th place and thus won his first Continental Cup points. He also achieved this place in the second competition. In the end he was able to achieve 148th place overall with six points.

In summer 2009 he clearly missed the points at the Continental Cup in Kranj, Slovenia . After two points wins in the FIS Cup in Oberwiesenthal , he was able to almost reach the podium in fourth place in the Alpine Cup jumping in Einsiedeln . After he showed good results in the Alpine Cup at the beginning of the 2009/10 winter season, he was again placed in the Continental Cup in Engelberg in December . He was again without points, but after two further good results in the Alpencup, in Titisee-Neustadt he won good Continental Cup points with 19th place. In Bischofshofen , too , he was among the top twenty.

At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2010 in Hinterzarten , Leyhe reached 22nd place in the individual competition and won the silver medal in the team competition. Shortly afterwards he was again German youth champion. On February 2, 2010, he started in Klingenthal for the World Cup qualification as part of the FIS Team Tour 2010 , but narrowly missed the leap into the competition with 42nd place. A good two weeks later he was able to score again in the Continental Cup in Brotterode and, after further good results, was able to finish the season in 67th place in the overall Continental Cup ranking.

After he had no chance again at the Summer Continental Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he started again in the Alpine Cup until mid-December 2010, where he won the first competition in Seefeld in Tyrol . In the two subsequent Continental Cup competitions in Engelberg, Leyhe won points again, but had to be satisfied with the lowest points. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2011 in Otepää , Estonia , he won his second silver medal after 2010 together with Richard Freitag , Marinus Kraus and Daniel Wenig in the team competition and jumped to 48th place in the individual competition. After the Junior World Championships he was named “Elite Student of the Year” by his school, the Uplandschule Willingen .

After graduating from the Uplandschule Willingen in 2011, Leyhe moved to Hinterzarten and was trained there by Stefan Horngacher for some time . In the summer of 2011 Leyhe started again in the Summer Continental Cup and was able to score points on mats for the first time in the Stams jumping . He succeeded again in Klingenthal . As a result, Leyhe was firmly anchored in the Continental Cup squad and also jumped into the top twenty at the start of the winter season in Rovaniemi with 18th place. After rather changeable results, he got the chance to qualify for the World Cup jumping on February 10, 2012 in his home town of Willingen as a replacement for the sick Michael Neumayer , but missed it by two places and ended up 42.

Following this, he started as the hope of the German team at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2012 in Turkey's Erzurum . However, with a 15th place in the individual and fifth place in the team competition, he was only able to convince to a limited extent after winning silver in 2010 and 2011. Things didn't go well for Leyhe in the Continental Cup either, so that in March he switched back to the FIS Cup for two more competitions. He finished the 2011/12 Continental Cup season in 115th place overall.

After Leyhe jumped ninth in the Continental Cup in July 2012 in Kranj for the first time among the top ten, he was able to achieve the first Continental Cup podium of his career on September 9, 2012 in Lillehammer . Even before this third place he had just missed the podium with fourth place the day before. In October he competed for the first time to qualify as part of the Ski Jumping Grand Prix , but after successfully qualifying he had to go home in 33rd place and thus without points.

He started the 2012/13 season with good results and several points. In January 2013 in Bischofshofen he just missed his second Continental Cup podium with fourth place. At the end of February 2013 he won the FIS Cup show jumping in Kranj.

After winning his first Continental Cup competition on December 12, 2014 in Rena , Norway, in the 2014/15 season , Werner Schuster nominated him for the two World Cup competitions in Engelberg. Stephan Leyhe collected his first World Cup points there with places 13th and 22nd. Since then he has been part of the German World Cup team. On his first Four Hills Tournament Leyhe finished 14th in the overall ranking.

On August 7th, 2015 Leyhe won a team competition in Hinterzarten for the first time together with Severin Freund , Andreas Wellinger and Andreas Wank as part of the Summer Grand Prix . On January 17, 2016, he and Severin Freund, Richard Freitag and Andreas Wellinger won the silver medal in the team competition of the Ski Flying World Championships on the Kulm , after finishing 19th in the individual competition.

He achieved his current best individual World Cup placement on February 15, 2017 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, with fifth place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti , Finland , he finished 13th on the normal hill and 16th on the large hill in the individual competitions. With the team he was fourth on the large hill.

On July 29, 2017, Leyhe achieved his first individual podium in the Summer Grand Prix in Hinterzarten, second behind Dawid Kubacki . At the Ski Flying World Championships 2018 in Oberstdorf , he finished 20th in the individual and fourth in the team competition. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, it was not used in the individual competitions. Before the final competition, he prevailed against Markus Eisenbichler in an internal competition and together with Karl Geiger , Richard Freitag and Andreas Wellinger won the silver medal with the team behind Norway . For this he was awarded the silver bay leaf on June 7, 2018 .

At the start of the 2018/19 World Cup season , Leyhe achieved his first podium finish in second place in the jumping in Wisła . He also achieved mostly good results in the subsequent World Cup competitions. Leyhe confirmed his good form at the Four Hills Tournament . Without having stood on the podium in the individual competitions (13th, 7th, 4th, 4th), it was enough for third place in the overall ranking. At the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld in Tirol , he and his teammates Karl Geiger , Richard Freitag and Markus Eisenbichler won the world championship title in the team competition. He was sixth in the individual competition on the normal hill.

On February 8, 2020, Leyhe won his first world cup competition on the Mühlenkopfschanze in Willingen . After he had already won the qualification and the second individual competition had to be canceled, he also won the overall ranking of the Willingen Five 2020 and thus received prize money of 25,000 euros. In a fall in the prologue of Raw Air 2020 in Trondheim , Leyhe tore the anterior cruciate ligament and tore the two menisci in his left knee. Due to the end of the season as a reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic , Leyhe nevertheless finished fifth in the overall Raw Air ranking and sixth in the overall World Cup ranking.
