Willingen Five 2020

Mühlenkopfschanze

The Willingen Five 2020 was a ski jumping competition , part of the Ski Jumping World Cup 2019/20 . It took place on February 8, 2020 for the third time on the Mühlenkopfschanze in Willingen , Hesse . Invitations to the World Cup weekend were made on behalf of the International Ski Association , the German Ski Association and the Willingen Organizing Committee . Originally, the Willingen Five was divided into three days and, in addition to a qualification round, which should give the right to start for both of the following competitions, should include two individual competitions. Due to strong winds, the elimination competition had to be postponed from Friday to Saturday before the second competition planned for Sunday had to be canceled on Saturday due to the hurricane low Sabine .

In addition to the qualification round, only the two rounds of the competition on February 8th were included in the final ranking of the Willingen Five. As in the previous year, the winner of the Willingen Five received an additional prize money of 25,000 euros. The overall winner was Stephan Leyhe , who started for the local SC Willingen. After Leyhe had already won the qualification by a large margin, he won his first World Cup competition in front of a home crowd.

Program and schedule

Due to poor weather forecasts, the program for the qualification day was changed at short notice on Thursday, February 6, 2020. The first jumpers were originally supposed to be released from the beam two and a half hours later. But the new schedule could not be adhered to, so that after several attempts, the elimination competition on Friday had to be canceled and postponed to Saturday. In addition, further changes have already been announced for the second individual jumping on Sunday, so that due to the hurricane gusts forecast for the afternoon with wind speeds of up to 160 km / h, the jumping was brought forward from 4 p.m. to 10:15 a.m.

In the following illustration, the original schedule of the Willingen Five, which was changed on February 7th, is not shown:

Participating nations and nominated athletes

The number of athletes that the nations are allowed to start depends on the previous season results in the World Cup and Continental Cup . The Willingen Five belongs to the 6th period, for which Austria, Poland and Slovenia had the highest starting limit with seven athletes. Initially 55 athletes from 13 nations were nominated for the weekend, although there were still changes. For example, the Norwegian Daniel-André Tande had to cancel at short notice due to illness. Ultimately, 53 athletes took part in the World Cup weekend. Although France, Italy, the USA and other nations could have nominated up to two athletes, none of these countries traveled to Willingen.
