Žiga Jelar (born October 22, 1997 ) is a Slovenian ski jumper . His greatest successes so far are the two world championships with the Slovenian junior and mixed teams at the 2017 Junior World Championships in Park City .

Career

Jelar, who starts for SK Triglav Kranj , made his debut in Einsiedeln in the Alpencup on September 13 and 14, 2013 , where he finished 60th and 57th. In February 2014 Jelar started in Zakopane for the first time in the FIS Cup . Since then he has regularly participated in both series of competitions.

On February 1st, 2015 Jelar made his debut in Zakopane in the Continental Cup and finished 32nd. His best placement so far in the Continental Cup was an eighth place in Bischofshofen on January 30th, 2016. On February 23rd, 2016 Jelar started in Kuopio for the first time in the World Cup and reached the 43rd place, leaving him with no World Cup points.

At the Slovenian Championships in Planica in 2016 , Jelar won the gold medal in the team competition together with Cene Prevc , Domen Prevc and Nejc Dežman . One year later at the Nordic Junior World Championships 2017 in Park City , Utah , Jelar won the gold medal in the team competition on the normal hill together with Tilen Bartol , Aljaž Osterc and Bor Pavlovčič, ahead of Germany and Austria. He also secured gold in the mixed team competition together with Bartol, Ema Klinec and Nika Križnar .

On July 29, 2017, Jelar started the Summer Grand Prix in Hinterzarten for the first time and finished 41st. In August 2017, Jelar was third in the overall ranking of the 2017 Beskydy Tour, which was held for the first time . With a fourth place in the first competition on August 18 in Szczyrk , he narrowly missed his first podium in the Continental Cup. After he was disqualified at the Grand Prix in Klingenthal due to deficiencies in his suit, he finished the 2017 season 49th overall.

Jelar achieved his first World Cup points when he finished 19th on December 30th, 2017 at the opening competition of the Four Hills Tournament 2017/18 on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf . After he was able to score in the other three competitions, he finished the tour on a 17th place. Although he jumped into the points several times in the following years, the result from Oberstdorf remained his best placement in an individual competition in the World Cup to this day.

At the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld in Tirol , he finished 23rd on the large hill and 27th on the normal hill. He was also sixth with the Slovenian men's team and fourth with the mixed team. After he ranked third in difficult conditions after the first round in the normal hill competition on the Toni-Seelos-Olympiaschanze , Jelar jumped only 87.0 meters in the second round and finally landed on 27th place. The sporting director of the German team, Horst Hüttel, criticized the jury for not intervening because of the heavy snowfall: “The second round was completely irregular. If that is not irregular, then I no longer understand the world. There is competition management for this. They failed miserably. ”The Austrian association president Peter Schröcksnadel also spoke of a lottery and criticized sticking to the schedule:“ We were lucky. We won a bronze in the lottery and we're happy about that. It was a crazy jump and not regular for me. (…) If you had to wait a little longer you could have covered the heaviest snowfall, the quick pulling through just for television was not right. "
