Piezodorus guildinii is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae). The type of bug bears the English name Red-banded Stink Bug ("Rotbanded Stinkwanze").

features

The bugs become 10 to 12 mm long. The older nymphs are mostly green with a brown-red border. The adults are colored green or green-yellow. They have two transverse stripes on their pronotum (the front is yellow, the rear is dark red). Another important distinguishing feature of the bug species is a long abdominal back that runs on the underside of the abdomen between the rearmost pair of legs.

distribution

The species occurs in the Neotropic . Their distribution area extends from the south of the United States through Central America and the West Indies to the south of South America (Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina). In the USA, the species is represented in the south and southeast. Their distribution area extends from New Mexico through Louisiana and Arkansas to Florida and South Carolina. The species has also been introduced to the Galapagos Islands .

Way of life

The animals are found on various legumes (Fabaceae) such as soybeans , alfalfa , clover and plants of the genus Indigofera . The nymphs and adult bugs suckle their forage plants on stems, leaves and flowers. Especially in the case of soybeans, they suck on seeds and legumes and thus damage the plant and its harvest. The bug species is considered the most important agricultural pest for soybean plantations in Brazil . In the USA the species also threatens the cultivation of soybeans and is fought with pesticides.

The females lay their eggs in rows of two. The clutch size is on average around 30 eggs. The bug species has five nymph stages. During the soybean harvest season, all stages of development of Piezodorus guildinii can be found in the plantations.
