John Obadiah Westwood

John Obadiah Westwood (born December 22, 1805 in Sheffield , † January 2, 1893 in Oxford ) was an English entomologist , archaeologist and illustrator . He was considered one of the most important entomologists of his time and was known for his ornate entomological illustrations.

Life

John Obadiah Westwood spent his early childhood in Sheffield and Lichfield . Before starting his academic career, he was trained as a lawyer. After completing his training, however, he devoted himself to entomology and archeology. He published his work in numerous scientific newspapers.

At the instigation of Frederick William Hope , the founder of the Hope Department of Entomology at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History , he became its curator and was later appointed by Hope as the first professor of zoology at Oxford University. He was also an entomological expert for The Gardeners' Chronicle .

Honors

In 1855 he was awarded the Royal Medal by the Royal Society . In 1857 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Westwood was a member of the Linnean Society of London and President of the Royal Entomological Society of London . When La Société Cuvierienne was founded in 1838 , he was one of the 140 founding members of the society.
