Jarkko Mikael Määttä [ mæːt: æ ] (born December 28, 1994 in Iisalmi ) is a Finnish ski jumper .

Career

Jarkko Määttä made his international debut on January 26th, 2008 at the FIS Cup in Kuopio, home with 32nd place. In the second competition he was able to line up in 18th place. In the summer of 2008 he recommended himself to the Continental Cup with a fourth place in the FIS youth competition in Hinterzarten , where he competed for the first time in Rovaniemi, Finland . A year later, the jumper from Kainuun Hiihtoseura collected his first points in the Continental Cup as 29th in Wisła . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2010 in Hinterzarten, he took 25th place in the individual and fourth place in the team competition.

At the start of the 2010/11 winter season in Kuusamo, the Finn celebrated his World Cup debut. With the 34th place in the qualification he was allowed to take part in the competition, but did not reach the final of the top 30 as 47th. Määttä was also unable to convince in another competition, a week later, in Kuopio. In the Continental Cup, on the other hand, he collected more points, even if it wasn't enough to achieve major successes. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2011 in Otepää , Estonia , he finished 32nd in the individual and seventh place in the team competition.

At the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2011 in Liberec in February 2011, the first respectable success of his career followed. In the individual competition he won by a large margin including a hill record (107 meters) and he was also able to secure the silver medal with the team. A few weeks later he reached the first COC podium at the Continental Cup in Kuopio and thus again recommended himself for a World Cup appearance in Lahti . Here he initially surprised with second place in the qualification. In the competition he then collected his first World Cup point as 30th. He was denied a better place after falling in the second round.

In spring 2011 Jarkko Määttä won the silver medal behind Olli Muotka at the Finnish championships on the large hill .

On July 17, 2011 Määttä made his debut in the Summer Grand Prix in Wisła as part of the Poland Tour . As 41st he could not score any points. He succeeded only three days later in Szczyrk with rank 26th. In the World Cup season 2011/12 he could not get any points, his best result was 40th place in Val di Fiemme . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2012 in Erzurum , he took 19th place in the individual and seventh place in the team competition.

At the Finnish Summer Championships in 2012 he repeated his success from the previous year and  finished second again - now behind Janne Happonen . In the 2012/13 season he was unable to get either Grand Prix points or World Cup points. In the Grand Prix he did not get past two 44th places. In the World Cup , it remained in a team competition in Zakopane , he could not qualify for an individual competition. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2013 in Liberec , he finished 27th in the individual and eighth place in the team competition.

On August 4, 2013, Määttä won a COC competition for the first time. At the summer show jumping in Kuopio he won ahead of Jernej Damjan and Čestmír Kožíšek . At the World Cup competition in Kuusamo he was 26th and thus, after two seasons without points, he managed to jump into the top 30 and get points again. He was able to repeat this several times during the season. At the Four Hills Tournament 2013/14 he even reached his first top ten placement in Innsbruck in ninth place. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2014 in Val di Fiemme , Italy , he took seventh place in the individual and fourth place in the team competition, which was his most successful and last participation in the Junior World Championships. A week later he took part in the Winter Olympics in Sochi , Russia . In the two individual competitions he survived the qualification, but did not reach the finals as 33rd on the normal hill or 43rd on the large hill. With the Finnish team, he finished eighth.

In February 2015, he first took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun . In the individual competition on the normal hill he finished 34th and on the large hill the 22nd place. In the mixed team competition he was tenth with the Finnish team and ninth with the team on the large hill. On March 8, 2015, he was able to improve his best individual World Cup placement to eighth in Lahti . He finished the overall World Cup 2014/15 with 151 points in 32nd place, which was his best result so far. On March 28th, 2015 he became Finnish champion on the large hill in Ruka.

During the 2015 summer season, he achieved two top ten placements in the Grand Prix . His best result was fourth in Hakuba . With 156 points he was 15th in the Grand Prix overall standings. On November 20, 2016 Määttä won the Finnish Championships 2016 on the normal hill in front of Lauri Asikainen and Janne Korhonen . In winter, he was unable to match the results of the summer or the previous World Cup season. His best individual placement in the World Cup remained a 46th place, with which he did not get a World Cup point.

On August 20, 2016, Määttä won the second COC competition of his career. As with his first triumph three years earlier, it was a mat jumping in Kuopio. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 2017 , he took 35th place in the individual competition on the normal hill and 27th place on the large hill. With the Finnish team he was sixth on the large hill. He was not nominated for the mixed team competition.

In February 2018 he took part in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . He was nominated for two of three competitions. In the individual competition on the large hill , he finished 37th and with the Finnish team he was eighth on the large hill .

At the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld in Tyrol , he was 19th on the normal and 50th and last on the large hill. He finished tenth with the Finnish men's team and eleventh with the mixed team.
