Janne Mikael Happonen (born June 18, 1984 in Kuopio ) is a former Finnish ski jumper .

Career

Happonen started ski jumping in 1992. He made his debut on November 17, 2001 in Kuusamo in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup and a week later, on November 23 of the same year, in the World Cup jumping on his home hill in Kuopio , where he immediately achieved World Cup points with an eleventh place. Previously, he had already won the Junior World Championships in Karpacz-Szklarska, Poland, on February 1, 2001 with the Finnish team .

He was able to repeat this success at the Junior World Championships in Schonach in 2002, and he also won the gold medal in the individual. In 2003 and 2004 he was the Finnish champion.

Happonen won his first Continental Cup on January 12, 2002 in Sapporo . His first place on the podium when he was on the A team was the Summer Grand Prix event in Einsiedeln , Switzerland , when he finished second.

In the winter of 2005/06 the Finn won several medals in international competitions. On January 15, 2006, he won the silver medal in the team competition at the Ski Flying World Championships in Bad Mitterndorf , while he was ninth in the individual. Even with the Winter Olympics in Turin , where he was in the individual competition on the normal hill 26, he took on the large hill silver with the Finnish team. In addition, he was part of the winning Finnish team in the team competition at the World Cup in Willingen .

In addition, on March 5, 2006, Happonen achieved his first individual victory in the World Cup in Lahti, which he followed up with another in ski flying in Planica on March 19. He finished his first complete World Cup season on a 14th place overall.

In the following season, the Finn was only used in eleven World Cup competitions. At the 2007 World Championships in Sapporo , Japan , he was only used in individual jumping on the large hill and finished 37th there. Only in the 2007/08 season did he jump a full season again, in which he was on his home hill in Kuopio on March 3, 2008 third individual World Cup victory. A few days earlier he had defended the silver medal from Kulm 2006 at the Ski Flying World Championships 2008 on the Heini-Klopfer Ski Flying Hill in Oberstdorf and had achieved fifth place in the individual. At the ski flying team competition in Planica on March 15, 2008, in the second round, he set his personal best of 227.5 meters.

At the end of June 2008 he suffered a broken thigh while training in Klingenthal , Germany. After he started jumping again in February 2009, the coaches hoped to be able to use him again at the 2009 Nordic Tournament . Happonen, who at this point had only completed just over twenty snow jumps, did not yet feel ready and announced his comeback for the 2009 summer competitions.

On July 19, 2009 the Finn celebrated his comeback with a win in a competition of the national Finlandia Veikkaus Tour on the normal hill in Lahti. Due to his overall good performance in this series of competitions, he was also nominated for the four-person Finnish Summer Grand Prix team.

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , he reached 19th place in jumping from the normal hill, tied with Austrian Andreas Kofler . After he was disqualified from the large hill in the individual competition, he finished fourth with the Finnish team on the large hill and barely missed another Olympic precious metal. At the following ski flying world championship in 2010 in Planice , Slovenia , he was able to win a medal again with the Finnish team in third place in the team competition. In the individual, he finished 15th.

Since February 13, 2011, Happonen has held the Finnish national record of 240 meters, which was set for ski flying at Vikersundbakken in Norway . At the Ski Flying World Championships 2012 in Vikersund , Norway , he finished eighth with the Finnish team and, like two years earlier, 15th in the individual.

In the qualification round at the opening weekend of the 2012/13 season in Lillehammer , Happonen suffered the third cruciate ligament tear of his career. The Finn then had to take a break for the rest of the season. At the beginning of July 2013 he completed the first training jumps after his injury. Just a few weeks later, on September 8, 2013, he won the gold medal in the individual competition at the Finnish summer championships. Happonen also won the first national competition before the start of the season in Rovaniemi, Finland. In the summer of 2016, Happonen officially ended his active ski jumping career.
