View of the village

Bois-d'Amont is a commune in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Bois-d'Amont is located at 1076  m , ten kilometers east of Morez and about 38 km north of the city of Geneva (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in the valley of the Orbe on both sides of the river, between the forest heights of the Risoux in the northwest and the Mont Pelé in the southeast, northeast of the Lac des Rousses , in the immediate vicinity of the Swiss border . Bois-d'Amont is the easternmost municipality in the Jura department.

The area of the 12.06 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Jura. The landscape is characterized by parallel ridges and longitudinal hollows, which are oriented towards the southwest-northeast in accordance with the direction of the fold of the Jura in this area. The central part of the municipality is occupied by the valley of the Orbe, the southwest continuation of the Vallée de Joux , which is a syncline of the Jura folds. The flat valley floor through which the river meanders is around one kilometer wide. It used to form an extensive moor area. In the southeast, the valley is flanked by the densely wooded slope of the Côte , which leads to the height of Mont Pelé. The municipal border and at the same time the national border with Switzerland mostly runs along the southern edge of the valley; only a small section of the Côte above the town center belongs to Bois-d'Amont. Here, at the edge of the terrace of Les Loges , the highest point in Bois-d'Amont is reached at 1,300  m .

On its northwest side, the Orbe Valley is also accompanied by a steep forest slope. The municipal area extends over an impassable area with parallel ridges and intervening, above-ground drainage-free hollows up to the Crêt des Arêtes (up to 1275  m ). The municipality is part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

A special feature is the settlement form of Bois-d'Amont. Besides the center around the church in the middle of the valley, the built-up area extends along the two roads that follow the northern and southern edge of the valley, as the middle of the valley used to be a swamp area . The row of houses along these two streets extends over a length of four kilometers each. In addition to the actual village, Bois-d'Amont also includes several settlements, hamlets, groups of farms and individual farms, including:

  • Le Vivier-de-Bois-d'Amont ( 1080  m ) on the northern edge of the valley
  • Les Landes-d'Aval ( 1072  m ) on the southern edge of the valley
  • Les Meuniers ( 1060  m ) on the left bank of the Orbe
  • Les Landes-d'Amont ( 1087  m ) in an elevated position on the southern edge of the valley
  • Les Combettes ( 1091  m ) on a ledge on the northern edge of the valley

Neighboring municipalities of Bois-d'Amont are Les Rousses in the southwest, Bellefontaine and Chapelle-des-Bois in the northwest and the Swiss municipalities Le Chenit in the northeast and Arzier-Le Muids in the southeast.

history

The area of Bois-d'Amont was cleared and made arable in the Middle Ages by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Claude . After the Reformation , the place formed the border between the reformed Vallée de Joux, which was under Bernese sovereignty, and the still Catholic uppermost part of the Orbe Valley, which belonged to the Free County of Burgundy. Together with Franche-Comté , Bois-d'Amont came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.
