The Lac des Rousses , formerly also called Lac Quinsonnet and Lac Quintenois , is a lake in the French Jura , in the Jura department , around 20 km northwest of Nyon in Franche-Comté . It is located at 1058  m on the parish of Les Rousses, just across the Swiss border.

geography

The Lac des Rousses covers an area of 97 hectares, is around 2 km long and a maximum of 500 m wide. Its greatest depth is 19 m. The lake is located northeast of the village of Les Rousses in the High Jura. It is located in a wide high valley that forms the southwestern continuation of the Swiss Vallée de Joux . On its north-west side, the Lac des Rousses and the high valley are flanked by the Forêt du Risoux ; the ridge of the Noirmont rises to the southeast . While the north-western bank rises relatively quickly, larger moor areas are spreading out, especially on the south bank.

geology

From a structural geological point of view, the Orbetal forms a syncline with the Lac des Rousses in the Jura folds . The subsoil of the valley floor consists of chalky and marly layers that were deposited in a tropical flat sea during the Cretaceous period . They were only brought into their current position much later, in the Miocene and Pliocene, in the course of the unfolding of the Jura Mountains. During the high stages of the various Ice Ages , the area was glaciated. Jurassic glaciers transported rock material from the surrounding ridges into the valley, and a quaternary sediment layer formed . As a result, the basin was lined with layers of marl and clay so that, despite the porous calcareous subsoil, moorland and a lake could arise.

Hydrology

The catchment area of the Lac des Rousses amounts to around 13 km². The most important tributary is the Bief Noir , which rises west of the Noirmont, flows through a moorland and flows into the lake from the south. Other short streams reach the lake from the surrounding slopes. The outflow is through the Orbe to the northeast to the Lac de Joux . Thus the Lac des Rousses is located in the extreme southwest of the Rhine catchment area . The lake has a water content of around 10 million m³. The average retention time of the water in Lac des Rousses is estimated to be around one year.

use

The Lac des Rousses is located in a region that is very popular with tourists, both in winter and in summer. Due to its altitude and its location in a closed basin (formation of a cold air lake), Lac des Rousses freezes completely over most winters. When there is snow cover, the frozen area is used for cross-country skiing. In summer, the Lac des Rousses is a popular destination for a bathing lake or for practicing other water sports. Furthermore, the lake water is used to treat drinking water for the surrounding communities.

The landscape around the Lac des Rousses is under nature protection. It is also part of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).

history

A diplomatic incident around the lake occurred in July 2015. The air force in nearby Switzerland had a permit to fly over French territory, but it took water from the lake without a permit. This was needed to care for cows in their own mountains and would otherwise have required a flight to more distant Swiss waters. The Swiss Army then apologized.
