The Lac de Joux is a lake in the Valley of the Vallée de Joux in the northwest of the Canton of Vaud , in western Switzerland . It is located at an altitude of 1004 m above sea level. M. in the Vaud Jura and is the largest lake in the Jura Mountains.
geography
The lake, which is around 9 km long and 1 km wide on average, extends from southwest to northeast and occupies the lower part of the Vallée de Joux. It is located in a valley between the Jura ranges of Mont Tendre in the southeast and the Risoux in the northwest. The Dent de Vaulion forms the end to the northeast . The only tributary of the Lac de Joux is the Orbe , which flows into the southwest. Otherwise only a few rivulets from the slopes of the Mont Tendre chain will reach the lake. To the north of Lac de Joux, after the 200 m wide land bridge at Le Pont, Lac Brenet, 2 m lower, joins. The Lac de Joux is connected to this by a small body of water, which only carries away a fraction of the water brought in by the Orbe. The rest of the excess water of Lac de Joux seeps into the limestone subsoil of the lake floor and only reappears in the Vallorbe caves (Source de l'Orbe) near Vallorbe .
The south-east bank of Lac de Joux is relatively flat, in the area of the mouth of the Orbe there is a large swamp area. In the north-west the lake is accompanied in its entire length by the hard rock rib Le Revers , which is why you will find a very steep, up to 80 m high, at times rocky and impassable shore here. The town of L'Abbaye and the elongated street settlements Vers-chez-Grosjean and Les Bioux are on the south-east bank, and Le Pont on the north-east bank , all of which belong to the political municipality of L'Abbaye .
Special
Because the lake is located in a completely closed high valley in which a cold air lake accumulates in winter depending on the weather conditions, it still freezes completely over most winters today. Then ice skating is possible on the large area.
In earlier times ice was extracted on the frozen lake in winter, which was exported mainly to France but also to Germany in the summer months. Customers were mainly hospitals, breweries and inns.
In the summer months (June to September) a regular boat operates on Lac de Joux. The ship operated by the company "Navigation sur le lac de Joux" connects Le Pont and Le Rocheray.
The Pont-Brassus-Bahn railway line runs parallel to the north bank .
