The Chemin de fer Pont-Brassus (PBr) was a standard gauge private railway in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . The route runs from Le Pont parallel to the north bank of Lac de Joux to Le Brassus . The railway has belonged to the regional transport company Travys since 2001 . Passenger traffic on the route is carried out by SBB . For this reason, the trains run continuously from Vallorbe via Le Pont to Le Brassus. There is an hourly cycle, on school days sometimes every half an hour.

history

After electrification, the SBB used the Fe 4/4 18509 to 18511 in the Vallée de Joux , which were equipped with a recuperation brake due to the great gradient between Le Pont and Le Day .
The two light metal cars Bi 475 (center) and Bi 476 (left, in orange VST standard paintwork ) of the Seetal type were procured by Chemin de fer Pont-Brassus in 1950 together with the SBB.

On the basis of a petition from the inhabitants of the Vallées in 1867, a tunnel was built through the Mont d'Orzeires , which fulfills a double function, on the one hand it is used for rail transport and on the other hand, in the event of an extraordinary flood, the drainage from the valley. (The Lac Brenet flows underground.)

On October 31, 1886, the Chemin de fer Pont-Vallorbe (PV) opened the railway line between Vallorbe and Le Pont. The PBr was then founded to extend the branch line further into the Vallée de Joux. Traffic between Le Pont and Le Brassus began on August 21, 1899. The PBr only owned passenger and freight cars, but no locomotives of its own. The operation was therefore carried out from the start by the JS, after its nationalization on May 1, 1903 by the SBB.

The economic crisis of the 1930s led to a marked decline in freight and passenger traffic; the operation with steam locomotives turned out to be too unprofitable. For this reason, the electrification was decided, which was completed on October 1, 1938; this enabled the operating costs to be reduced considerably. Since the SBB continued to manage operations, the use of the same electricity system was obvious.

The frequency of passenger traffic fell markedly in the 1980s, not least because of the poor timetable. Therefore, the route has been fundamentally modernized and a new timetable concept with modern rolling stock ( SBB RBDe 4/4 ) was introduced.

On January 1, 2001, the PBr went on in the new company Travys .

In 2008, the terminus in Le Brassus was relocated around 100 meters in the direction of Le Pont as part of the station modernization. This shortened the total length of the route from 24.55 km to 24.46 km.
