The Tem III were small two-axle rail tractors with two-power drive of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) for station service. Compared to the previously commissioned SBB Tem I and the later SBB Tem II , they were the most powerful version of small shunting locomotives with an electric drive and a combustion engine.
technology
All two-motor vehicles of types Tem I to Tem III get their energy as a rule via the contact line. With an additionally built-in diesel unit, they can run on tracks without overhead lines. For cost reasons, the drive motors of the Tem III were constructed identically to those of the De 4/4 luggage railcars. Each axis is driven by its own cradle bearing motor. These motors work with alternating current when they are fed by the overhead line; in diesel mode they work as direct current motors. The performance with a diesel engine is lower than with pure electric operation and is around a third compared to the feed from the catenary. The standard version was equipped with a compressed air brake ex works.
Deliveries and use
The SBB E 3/3 Tigerli series steam locomotives were still in use in the SBB's shunting service until the 1960s . As early as 1950, in addition to electric and diesel-powered shunting tractors, the SBB also procured relatively small numbers of two-power locomotives especially for shunting services and the operation of non-electrified sidings.
A pre-series, built in 1954 and 1955 and designated as SBB Tem III 2/21 'to 23', built by Vevey, Sécheron and Saurer, was followed from 1957 by a series of 42 vehicles, the Tem III 2/2 4 to 45 - discontinuous - were numbered. These were supplied by SLM, Sécheron, BBC and Saurer. When the series vehicles were put into service, the prototypes were given the numbers 1 to 3. In 1963, the vehicles, including the pre-series vehicles, became Tem III 321 to 345.
With the introduction of new type designations , the Tem III pre-series vehicles were designated as series 222 000 to 002 on the state railway. The series version was given the numbers 220 010 to 052. With the introduction of twelve-digit numbers from 2005, 97 85 1 220 were supplemented by the serial number. This book designation was not written on the vehicles.
In 1994 all Tem IIIs except the pre-production vehicle number 323 were still in service. The series was phased out to a greater extent in 2006. On January 1, 2008, SBB still had 25 vehicles in stock. All machines were retired by 2013.
Whereabouts
Presumably only three vehicles have survived, other sales to scrap dealers were probably used for recycling.
Tem III 329 was retired in May 2011 and sold to the transport company Travys (Transports Vallée de Joux-Yverdon-les-Bains-Ste-Croix) in the Yverdon region.
Tem III 351 was intended for the SBB Historic Heritage Foundation (SBB Historic).
Tem III 354 has been maintained by the Zürcher Oberland Steam Railway Association (DVZO) in Bauma since 2006 .
