Le Coni'Fer is the project of a museum railway ( French Chemin de Fer Touristique ) on the railway line from Pontarlier to Vallorbe in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in the French Jura . The completed section is 7.5 km long and is operated by steam locomotives.

History of the railway line

The cross-border, 27 km long route from Pontarlier to Vallorbe (Switzerland) with the two stations La Cluse-et-Mijoux and Les Hôpitaux-Neufs - Jougne was opened on July 1, 1875. She crossed under the watershed on the Col de Jougne between the catchment areas of the Rhine and Rhone in the 1.6 km long tunnel of Jougne with an apex at 1012 meters. After the opening of the Simplon Tunnel in 1906, the first direct connection between Paris and Italy ran here. The importance can be seen in the fact that 40 trains daily used this route.

In 1915, however, a second route from Frasne to Vallorbe was opened, which had a lower gradient and crossed the Jura massif in the Mont d'Or tunnel . In addition, there was no longer any need to worry in Vallorbe. From now on, long-distance traffic ran only over this new route and the previous one only retained local traffic. From 1935, rail buses were used with a speed of 40 km / h. In 1940 French troops blew up the Jougne tunnel in order to prevent the German armed forces from advancing. In 1969, the rest of the route was finally stopped.

Museum operation

At the beginning of the 1990s, an association was founded that is dedicated to the reconstruction and operation of this route. The route between Les Hôpitaux-Neufs and Fontaine-Ronde has been passable since 1993. The museum is only open from June to September, the journey time is around 40 minutes. Several charcoal piles have been set up in Fontaine-Ronde and there are demonstrations of charcoal burning .
